So, as those of you on my flist know, I'm in the process of working to get my UK driver's license on a standard transmission after many years of driving automatic. I already know UK and US attitudes towards manual v. automatics are very different, but further to some cultural confusion on my LJ, I have to ask the great transatlantic collective this exceedingly important and burning question about hill starts:

I don't think there's necessarily a right or wrong way--it's just that the familiarity with each method seems to fall pretty strictly across cultural divides on my flist. However, my instructor's teaching me to do it without--which shoots a hole in my theory, though he's taught a lot of American expats. So I'm looking for a larger pool of anecdotal evidence. ;)
eta: I just thought--it'll be interesting to see how many Americans participate in this poll vs. Brits.
