I was catching up on Tumblr, and Wil Wheaton posted a link to this archive of propaganda. After I read through that article, I followed a related link to The Curious Story of How Bootlegged Hollywood Movies Helped Defeat Communism in Romania which originated in this New York Times Story about the Romanian translator.
It’s a very interesting reminder that as Americans we have so much more than people in other countries. Especially countries where the people are living under oppressive dictatorships.
I was astonished. “Look at the flats Americans have, incredible!”
“Look at how big their cars are, the streets!”
You can see, behind the action, in every film, you could see what those people had, what they ate, what freedoms they had, how they spoke to one another. It was completely different. And somehow, underneath it all, you felt… What freedom was.”
OK, I’m thankful again.
