So yesterday, after talking about the Thief games a bit, I had the compulsion to install all three games and start the entire series from scratch. Sadly, when I used to play games all the time, my attention span was so short that I never actually FINISHED any game I had, including all three of the Thief games, despite my love for them. So now I've decided to go back and start the entire series from the beginning.
What's beautiful about the Thief games are the TENSION. The entire point of the game is NOT to be seen or discovered. This means you have to be slow and quiet all the time, because the character you play is certainly NOT a fighter (though Garrett does ave a sword just in case). This is all accomplished by using various tools such as the backjack (to sneak up behind guards and knock them out), water arrows (to put out torches) and moss arrows (to make the ground sound absorbent). While some games give you the thrill of mowing down your opponent, the Thief games give you the thrill of outwitting your opponents by not being seen at all.
So last night I began playing the first game after turning the lights out (one of the best ways to play Thief). MAN it felt like it was the first time playing it because I was so excited and tense and nervous. I could only play for an hour before I got tired (it was late), but I had an amazing time knocking out a couple of guards, moving their bodies so they wouldn't be found, and swiping the keys off a drunk guard without him even noticing.
Once I started playing, the old training of my previous sessions kicked in, and I was slowly creeping my way in the shadows, and making new shadows with my water arrows. I'll tell ya, few games give me that "you are there" feeling more than the Thief games. I just wish more of them were being made, but thankfully, fans keep putting out fan-made missions, and with over 600 right now, I think I'll be busy for a while.
Anyway, hope y'all are shiny. :)
