Ok, so in keeping with the spirit of this week (almost: it's Spring Weekend, a time of music and debauchery and four-day alcohol binges, and this has to do with music, at least), I have a question for you guys.
I read about Duffy in Rolling Stone last week, and she sounded interesting, so I looked her up on YouTube. Her first single, "Mercy" (warning: this song really gets into your head), has two videos: the
UK version and the
US version. Ignoring the question of "why did they make another version for the US" (which I think is pretty clear; the UK version wouldn't really sell over here, and the US version is VERY American, if not exactly original), which do you prefer?
Personally, I prefer the US version. This may be because it's the one I saw first, but I also think it's more in keeping with the spirit of the song. The UK version doesn't make sense to me; it's quite pretty, probably prettier than the US version, but I don't understand what modernized clog dancing has to do with the song. Don't get me wrong; I don't understand the relevance of the film things in the US version, either, but I think the dancing and her performance make so much more sense (watch the faces in the crowd, especially: there's so much surrender and powerlessness and captivity there). But everyone on YouTube seems to vehemently hate the US version, and I don't understand why, and so I'm looking for other points of view. Especially since I think I ought to prefer the UK version, as it's much more do my taste, but I don't.
On a somewhat related note: there's a music video I saw a little over a year ago, and I can't remember the song, so I can't find it, and I'd LOVE to watch it again. It's a kind of dance-rock song, and it starts with this girl dressed all in white and grey sitting in her grey office, being annoyed by the guy behind her. She gets up and starts walking to the bathroom, and you see she's wearing red patent-leather pumps, and as she's walking she starts to float, and the lights go out, and she winds up dancing in the bathroom. Anyone recognize it?
