-“Pencils. Eraser. Snacks. Soda. Kleenex. Tylenol,” enumerated Kirsten while fidgeting nervously on the kitchen stool.
-“Mooom, we got it. Relax. We’re the ones who are gonna take these final exams, so stop being so stressed,” whined Seth while drinking his coffee and reading the newspapers.
- “Seth’s right, honey, they're both going to be fine ,” Sandy said while putting a glass of orange juice in front of Ryan. "Vitamins, just what you need," he added before placing another glass in front of Seth who rolled his eyes and stood up.
- “Ryan, it’s time, we gotta go. Far, far away. Maybe even in another galaxy, if you know what I mean.”
- “Everyone knows what you mean, Seth Ezezkiel. Drink your orange juice and let Ryan drink his before I drive you.”
- “Ouchie. The dreaded middle name.”
Sandy watched Ryan attentively. His foster son was definitely nervous and Sandy realized that he had no idea how to reassure him. A “I’m sure it’s gonna be okay. You worked really hard and it’s one of your favorite subject” was his most effective way to soothe Seth’s nervousness but it would only make Ryan more nervous, he realized.
-“But Mom, we’re supposed to join Luke, Summer and her friends on the beach after physics,” explained Seth.
Kirsten frowned and turned towards Ryan, who didn't look surprised by Seth’s assessment.
-“You are?”
Ryan nodded absently as he closed the physic book he had been reading.
-“Be right back,” he said as he got to his room.
As soon as Ryan left the kitchen, Kirsten sat down and asked Seth
-“Are you sure, Ryan’s up to that beach party of yours?”
-“No, mother, I’m coercing him. You know how impressive I can be. With my massive amount of muscles…”
Sandy chuckled before becoming serious and putting his hand on Seth’s shoulder:
-“We don’t want him to feel pressured into going if he doesn’t want to.”
-“Well, maybe it wasn’t my idea. Maybe it’s Summer and Luke who decided to do something nice for Ryan. Maybe it involved his friends of the boxing team. Maybe I’m afraid to be with those guys…have you seen how huge some of them are? Oh my god, I’m gonna die tonight. Mom, Dad, you were great parents. Maybe the best ones. Except that the best parents ever would have bought us a car. Two cars actually.”
-“How subtle of you, son…I think we got the message but our answer is still no. You’re free to borrow ours when you need to, but no car yet for you.”
Ryan returned with another pile of books under his arm.
-“Kid, when are you planning to read all these ?” Sandy asked.
- “I’m not even sure I’m gonna open them. It’s…it’s kind of stupid, but I just need to take them with me.”
- “Oh my god, we’ve got a case of Kirsten-itis. When we were at Berkeley, she always had to carry the books she was having an exam on.
- “Now you know that you’re not only an Atwood and a Cohen, you’ll be happy to discover that you’re also a true Nichols, congrats, man," joked Seth. "We could phone Grandpa to tell him that…
-“He’ll be delighted to know that at last, he’s got one grandson gifted in physics,” answered Kirsten before giving her car keys to Seth.
-Mother, I’m wounded…”
Ryan smiled and kissed Kirsten before leaving with Seth.

-“We’ve got chips, soda and the most important thing, a soccer ball”, declared Luke.
-“Atwood and Cohen are coming, so hurry up!” answered Summer. “And Atwood is kind of smiling. Weird…”
-“Good weird. Hey, guys, come on!”
While Luke throw a soda can to Ryan, Summer tenderly kissed Seth.
-“How was physics?”
-“It should be okay for me, but according to Mr. Bentley, Ryan totally nailed it. He’s getting a scholarship and he'll be allowed to take some classes at UCLA next year.”
-“Who would have thought Atwood would turn into a physic nerd?” smiled Summer.
- “He looks happy, so it’s fine by me. And it’s pretty cool because I’m the comic books geek, he’s the physic nerd, it’s a fair share.”
-“Wanna play, Cohen?” yelled Luke.
-“What’s that ball for?”
-“Dude, it’s a soccer ball.”
-“What makes you think that I know what to do with a soccer ball?”
-“Good point,” acknowledged Luke. “Atwood, your brother is useless, let’s play!”
Summer watched Ryan kick the ball. A little less than one year ago, Chino had arrived in her life, in their life and she realized that she had never thought that night that he could have such a great part in her world. Thanks to him, she had changed so much, she wasn’t the superficial chick she was eleven months ago anymore, she had a boyfriend she wasn’t talking to before meeting Atwood, she wasn’t hanging out with Holly. In a nutshell, she wasn’t a selfish bitch anymore. Thanks to Cohen, thanks to Atwood. She smiled and kissed Seth.
-“Mmhh, what did I do to deserve such a kiss?”
-“Nothing, I was bored…”. Summer rolled her eyes and kissed Seth again.

-“Eavesdropping on our children, you should be ashamed,” Sandy whispered to Kirsten. “I think you’ve forgotten your trench coat and your sunglasses, though…”
-“I wanted to be sure that they were all right.”
-“And what’s your verdict, PI woman?”
Kirsten observed Ryan as he ran on the beach while kicking a soccer ball. Luke was yelling something she didn’t get and Ryan scored a goal. She watched Luke and some others kids scream and run towards Ryan. Her foster son was beaming with pride and for the first time in months, Kirsten felt that Ryan really was doing well.
