One Song Two Vids Just like SPN is shared story of two brothers with their own perspectives, different vids with various POVs can be made from the same song. My inner geek finds a vidder’s lyric interpretation and how they choose to make their story come alive with editing, clip choice, and effects interesting. Here are some of my favorite paired vids to tickle your inner geek.
Eye-Popping External-Source Material Seamlessly integrated external-source material can enhance a vid’s narrative or emphasize the visual commentary by providing clips outside of canon. Here are a couple of standout vids where it’s hard to tell (if you didn’t know ever scene from every SPN episode) when clips from SPN end and snippets from elsewhere begin.
Interesting Effects, Unique Style Vids can act as character commentaries, visual meta on theme, fandom, and larger social issues as well as retell a story (narrative and recap vids) or be a vehicle for new stories (AU vids), and convey other deep and meaningful things I know nothing about. But, at the heart of the matter, we watch vids because they’re pretty and fun. Here are some of my favorite pretty vids with interesting effects and unique styles that make them fun to watch.
How-could-these-not-have-been-rec’ed?! Recs The title is self-explanatory. :)
Newly released vid rec's for June:
week 1,
week 2,
week 3,
week 4,
week 4.5 Then I got a banner for basically sitting around and watching vids! :D Now if RL only worked like this...
Then I thought, "I should compile all my other fandom wrecks rec's, too" because, you know, I like to pretend I'm organized (and never mind I haven't been updating my proper vid rec list to begin with). So here's a new list of other great fandom/multifandom vids I've really enjoyed.
Multifandom and Other Fandom Vid Recs (BSG, Firefly/Serenity, TSCC)
Climbing up the Walls by obsessive24 (SPN, Firefly, Heros), Sam/Dean, River/Simon, Peter/Nathan: This vid is about family, control, power, guilt, love, and sex. It’s a commentary on how fandom distorts the sibling relationship--the parallels (narrative and visual) are well drawn.
Unnatural Selection by charmax (BSG, TSCC, Terminator movies): Humans vs. Robots from a Darwinian perspective and the merging of my favorite things: science dorkery and fannish dorkery. Bonus points for Discovery Channel-like clips and the visually stunning TSCC swimming pool massacre.
Seven Nation Army by charmax (DW, TSCC, BSG, The Matrix trilogy, Transformers, I Robot): OMG ROBOTS!!!!! OMG GUNS!!!!!! OMG FRANTIC RUNNING!!!!! What else could you want? Wait … OMG MOTORCYCLES!!!!! Awesome.
We Didn’t Start the Fire by chailia43 (BSG) ensemble: I’ve rec’ed this before somewhere in the bottomless pit of my LJ, but this vid is just that good to rec again. A clever reimagining of historic events through the lens of BSG. You will smile, it’s that much fun.
Hurricanes by gigglemonster (BSG) Sam/Galen: Minus the non-canon pairing, this vid is everything that is BSG, dramatic, angsty, with epic space ship battles and pretty pictures of … everything. The pacing is terrific, and this vid ebbs and flows beautifully with a great song. Make sure you watch with the volume up.
Raise It Up by beccatoria (TSCC) ensemble: The juxtaposition of girls and war and girls and guns and girls using guns in war. Yikes!
My Medea by yunitsa (Dollhouse, Firefly/Serenity, Buffy): A big, juicy commentary on the sexualization of women using violence and control in Whedonland.
Fade Out by cylune9 (Firefly/Serenity), River: A gorgeous vid that flows along to such an appropriate song.
Passive Manipulation by crickets (Buffy, BSG, SPN, Firefly, V for Vendetta, Death Proof, Blade Trinity, and Angel), female characters: Girl Power! \o/
Karaoke soul by gigglemonster (TSCC) Derek/Camerson, Derek/Allison: This vid is the full package: great editing, economic storytelling, terrific clip selection, and a perfect song that carries everything along smoothly and effortlessly.
Suicide Future (Rewind) and Suicide Future (Fast Forward) by chaila43 (TSCC) Derek, John: These paired vids are complimentary opposites. They look at John and Derek and how they’ve lived their lives in the time-travel bendiness where the past and the future pretzel around each other.
I Will Follow by chaila43 (TSCC) Savannah, John Henry: A neat vid set to a catchy tune that highlights Savannah and John Henry’s friendship. Big blue little girl eyes and sadle shoes + a stiffly waving robot with action figures = :D
Cathedrals by chaila43 (BSG) D’Anna, Laura, Caprica: Three verses, three women, three stories. This vid is quiet and haunting and perfect for an introspective look back on their journey.
You Passed by by crickets (BSG), Kara/Sam, Kara/Lee, Kara/Leoben: Ahhh, the angst! This vid reminds me why I watched BSG-the complicated, dysfunctional, and tragically beautiful human relationships.
Post Blue by obsessive24 (Firefly/Serenity), River/Simon: I’ve rec’ed this vid waaayyy back in the day, but here it is again! Nicely paced with some interesting effects that integrate fanart, this vid is a visual feast for the eyes.
