Interesting Effects, Unique Style

Vids can act as character commentaries, visual meta on theme, fandom, and larger social issues as well as retell a story (narrative and recap vids) or be a vehicle for new stories (AU vids), and convey other deep and meaningful things I know nothing about.  But, at the heart of the matter, we watch vids because they’re pretty and fun.  Here are some of my favorite pretty vids with interesting effects and unique styles that make them fun to watch.

Vid Name/Vidder: My hands by naisica (YT) Leave comments at LJ here.
Song/Artist: Hands by Jewel
Genre: Dean character study (through S2)
Why you’re reccing the vid: Dean angst times a million. The use of masks/split screen, color, blue-filtered and reversed and unsynchronized clips make this vid unique with a great “oo” factor.  It’s set to a quiet, bare bones song that surprisingly works and yields a vid that’s gorgeous and achy.

Vid Name/Vidder: To Be A Ghost by astartexx
Song/Artist: What's it feel like to be a ghost? By Taking Back Sunday
Genre: Dean character study (S1), action
Why you’re reccing the vid: One of the first SPN vids to amp effects up on steroids.  It’s a fast-paced, action-packed circus of the Dean Winchester we all fell in love with in S1 that will keep a busload of 5-year olds with ADHD transfixed.  Download it because you’ll have to watch it more than once just to SEE everything.

Vid Name/Vidder: Somebody's Child by sabaceanbabe
Song/Artist: Once by Brad Caleb Kane
Genre: Sam and Dean Gen (though mid-S4)
Why you’re reccing the vid: Two vids for the price of one!  The secondary screen along the sidebar allows for multiple interpretations of the lyrics, lends to its alternating Sam and Dean POV, and yields an interesting effect by dividing attention between a large and a smaller screen.  The song is catchy, heart-breaking, and fitting for a future look back on the "Winchester gospel".  The chorus sequences are beautifully chosen and will leave your heart a mangled mass of barely-beating pulp on the floor.

Vid Name/Vidder: Kinetic by maichan808
Song/Artist: Separation (extended version) by Jonathan Elias
Genre: experimental
Why you’re reccing the vid: This is more of a study of camera movement and impressions than a traditional narrative/themed/POV vid.  The desaturatization and blurriness fits nicely with the music, and some of the most striking pans and crane shots of the entire series make for breathtaking sequences.  It’s atmospheric, haunting, and has a fluidity that yields a unique and memorable style.  For another vid in the same flavor, check out Silent Night.

Vid Name/Vidder: You’re Real by secretlytodream  (a.k.a. Loki)
Song/Artist: You’re Real by Asche and Spencer
Genre: Sam character study, Dean POV, themed montage (through early-S5)
Why you’re reccing the vid: This is one of the best examples of a great voice-over vid.  The unique framing and clip selection, faded transitions, and use of slow motion as well as black and white vs. color add to the overall effect rather than distract.  This is Sam and Dean in their quiet moments and the heart of their brotherly devotion laid bare.  For another interesting stylistic vid, watch Stay.

Vid Name/Vidder: One Step Closer To Be Frozen by gentlesideoffury (a.k.a. xdudeyoufuglyx) (YT)
Song/Artist: remix by Dante
Genre: ensemble, action (through S5)
Why you’re reccing the vid: Fast cuts, effects galore, and other stuff I missed because I was too busy just trying to just keep up make this vid intense.  I can’t describe it in any other way than to say it’s the visual equivalent of a three-minute sweaty, sexy discotheque acid trip.  *is woozy*

Vid Name/Vidder: Protège Moi by charmax
Song/Artist: Protège Moi by Placebo
Genre: Sam/Dean (S1)
Why you’re reccing the vid: No effects/style rec list would be complete without this vid inspired by film noir/Sin City.  It’s classic S1, it’s stunning, and (I’m really pretty sure) it was the first SPN vid to use color in this way.

rec lists, vidder: astartexx, vidder: maichan808, vidder: naisica, vidder: sabaceanbabe, vidder: charmax, theme: action, vidder: gentlesideoffury, theme: gen, theme: special effects, theme: wincest, theme: character study, vidder: secretlytodream
