I think a big part of why I adore Marguerite as much as I do is that she's sooooo ahead for her time. She speaks her mind, independent, intelligent, self-sufficent, all traits that most people would attribute to men during that period, but yet, as tough as she is, she does have her feminine moments. She's an excellent shakeup for the crew I think, and especially for Roxton, jaded and carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and all. Their banter is what gets me going.
Some may like Ned/Veronica, and they're okay. But they lack a certain... fire (read: witty banter and sexual chemistry) to keep me entertained.
I just love how nobody can escape their past, even in... (wait for it) THE LOST WORLD XDXDXD

*nodnod* ITA. She doesn't give a damn, she is who she is and she won't compromise on that for 'propriety' or abide by social restrictions for 'mere females'. I love how in Nectar, Challenger goes, 'Where I come from, women are not so bold' and she laughs *squees* and replies, 'How dull for you'. It doesn't matter to her, she won't be shamed or change her nature to suit the values of the time. I love it.
tough as she is, she does have her feminine moments.
See, what gets me is that being 'strong' sometimes equates to 'losing one's femininity' in women. It really pissed me off in Voyager how as soon as Seven joined the crew, Janeway stopped wearing these sexy peach nightgowns and began wearing these matronly boring grey neck-to-toe gowns. Blech. Once they get the sexpot on the crew, Janeway stopped being 'feminine' for some reason and that was so irritating.

I fell over giggling at that scene because it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Marguerite. It's kinda hysterical because for a little while most of the guys, especially the older ones, don't know what to make of her or even worse, how to handle her. She's so much more than this whole money-grubbing harlot that she pretends to be, and I'm SOOOOOOO glad that they got past that. Well more or less, except for when Veronica (sorry VEE - I could dropkick Finn down an airlock too - sorry if you like her XD) gets bratty and tries to pigeonhole Marguerite.
See, what gets me is that being 'strong' sometimes equates to 'losing one's femininity' in women.I could not agree more. I'm not sure where people or writers get this RIDICULOUS idea from. My biggest thing is that for a while, any strong woman was a lesbian. Xena, yet another cheesy hokey show I adored... Like Xena kicked ass (I dare anyone else to do

*nodnod* I'm so used to the lovable, supportive Summerlee that when I rewatched it, I was surprised at his attitude towards her at the start. He mellows soon enough, though, but Challenger maintains the superior attitude for quite a while, lol. I like that Marguerite gets to impress him with her scientific knowledge along the way and he realizes that she's not just a pretty face, heh.

Veronica pisses me off. I mean, how many times does Marguerite save her ass and she still gets on her case? She rarely thanks her when Marguerite puts herself in danger to save their lives, and just takes advantage of her, it's ridiculous. One of the worst moments I think is The Guardian, she drags Marguerite out from the fumes from the

SO TRUE. Summerlee always gave off that grandfatherly vibe, especially with the way he watched out for her. Was it in Nectar when he got sick from the bee sting and Marguerite pretended to be Anna for him? I thought it was such an incredibly sweet moment, and she always did handle him with kid gloves. It's too bad they didn't keep him around more. Broke my heart at the end of Season 1 :(

I'm not sure if with Veronica it's a matter of jealousy or naivete in some ways. She's probably always thought of herself as being remarkably capable for having survived in the jungle all these years (and kudos to her for being able to do so), but in comes Marguerite being able to do so just as well

Hercules held their guy/guy relationship strictly platonic (slash fans would beg to differ but WHATEVER)
Guys can be buddies and nobody except slashers make anything of it. But with women, there's always that speculation because women can't be friends on tv, noooo.
they felt they had to take a sexual route with the two women's relationship.
This is somewhat random and not entirely related to our conversation, but your comment about women's relationships reminded me of this rant [under #3. strong female characters]. Society has these double standards about the attitudes people hold towards men and women.

Yes, Nectar it was. Oddly enough, since it was royal jelly they were after, so why call it 'nectar'? Unless they meant it in a metaphorical sense

I read your rant and I honestly couldn't agree more. I mean, is it wrong to admire or even respect a woman and not have it turn into a "ZOMG YOU LOVE HER?!" thing? I can even find a woman beautiful and not have it be sexual, you know? I'm the same as you. Sure there's physical beauty but it's the character that I think really brings it home. You could have some hot chick but if she's a twit, I wouldn't admire or respect her. I'm not sure why women are always reduced to just looks and even worse is when other women do it to each other. It's quite aggravating -.-
That attitude conflicts with her views of herself a good person, so it's buried but of course, it ends up being expressed in various bouts of bitterness or callousness to Marguerite.I think you said it best a while back how Veronica saw everything in black and white. Marguerite's shade of grey

And that is a cue to bring out one of my favorite quotes [stolen from speckles]: 'it's beauty that captures your attention, personality that captures your heart'. SO TRUE.
The sad thing is that women are just as guilty of this kind of narrow-mindedness as men. You'd think we'd stick together, but for some reason, but no, it's always 'success is determined by teaming up with the guys'. The saddest thing, I think, is on one of the Survivor seasons, there was ONE GUY and like, six or seven women. With those odds, you'd definitely think a woman would take out the top spot, right? Wrong. The dude played them all against each other and ended up winning. I am so disgusted.
So Veronica, for all her vine-swinging, dagger-throwing ways, doesn't know what to make of herThat brings up one of my pet peeves- Veronica seemingly carrying only one knife with her. I mean, I

You know, they always talk about men being competitive but I think women are just as bad at times, especially around other women. I'm not sure I get it but I'm sure I'm guilty of it XDXDXD
It also reminds me of a scenario where a girlfriend/wife meets the mistress or other woman in a relationship. Somehow the woman automatically is the bitchwhore who seduced her man and blahblahblah. I find it ridiculous that the man somehow is blameless in this. Why is it that women do this to each other? I mean, both the adulterers are guilty here, but why is it that the adulterous woman gets more of the blame if not all?
Marguerite deserves an episode where she uses the whip to win the day. In fact, I'm surprised that she wouldn't have used it more often in her survival in the jungle given her prowess with it!!!
I still think Marguerite could've taken Veronica on if Marguerite were truly fighting. Physically,
( ... )
I think the problem is that 'competitiveness' is acceptable in men but not women. Women aren't allowed to be ambitious. So they gotta cover it up and it gets expressed as cattiness, pettiness, this fakeness that precedes a knife-in-the-back at the first opportunity, and the best target for this is other women because they are also playing by or at least bound by the same unwritten rules.
Somehow the woman automatically is the bitchwhore who seduced her man and blahblahblah. I find it ridiculous that the man somehow is blameless in thisITA. I hate that double standard, I can't understand why the wife/girlfriend wouldn't feel more betrayed by her partner who is supposed to be committed to her and love her and care for her. There are stronger bonds there and more reason to be outraged and disappointed and bitter with the partner than with some random woman who, yes, should've been more decent and moralistic but who ultimately owes you nothing, right
( ... )
You know, we should probably stop spamming odakota_rose and take this to one of our lj's instead XDXDXD
Hee, I was feeling a bit guilty about that. I have this thing with boundaries, though, when fandom fever takes hold of me, I don't really respect 'em. :P
the inconsistencies with Marguerite's character. She's supposed to be this super spy, but she trips every two seconds when running away It irritates me how often she needs to be rescued by Roxton. I mean, romantic, yes, but it offends my notions of how kick-ass Marguerite is. To their credit, Marguerite shows herself to be quick-witted when it comes to thinking on her feet and coming up with smart plans on the fly, but...super spy, hello? You think she'd be a little more adept when it comes to the physical stuff
