It's kinda hysterical because for a little while most of the guys, especially the older ones, don't know what to make of her or even worse, how to handle her.
*nodnod* I'm so used to the lovable, supportive Summerlee that when I rewatched it, I was surprised at his attitude towards her at the start. He mellows soon enough, though, but Challenger maintains the superior attitude for quite a while, lol. I like that Marguerite gets to impress him with her scientific knowledge along the way and he realizes that she's not just a pretty face, heh.
except for when Veronica (sorry VEE - I could dropkick Finn down an airlock too - sorry if you like her XD) gets bratty and tries to pigeonhole Marguerite.
Veronica pisses me off. I mean, how many times does Marguerite save her ass and she still gets on her case? She rarely thanks her when Marguerite puts herself in danger to save their lives, and just takes advantage of her, it's ridiculous. One of the worst moments I think is The Guardian, she drags Marguerite out from the fumes from the man-eating plant but then shakes her- the woman who nearly died, thank you- and gets all snotty, 'You try that again, you die where you fall' and I'm just, 'Way to make me HATE YOU, BIATCH'. *eyeroll* All my goodwill toward her for saving my heroine evaporated into nothingness.
Finn actually doesn't bother me that much, lol. I know almost everyone hates her- although I wonder if it's as much for who she is as the fact that she's 'replacing' Ned- but she was kinda cute and bouncy and stuff. I like that with her history, she's almost a younger version of Marguerite, although being young, she adapts to the treehouse a lot easier than Marguerite did, lol.
Like Xena kicked ass and she was beautiful and intelligent and strong and everything that a woman isn't supposed to be and lo and behold, she's a lesbian (well of sorts anyway).
Bi-curious? She had lots of male relationships along the way...but yeah, it did irritate me a little. I was hoping they'd keep the whole thing with Gabrielle subtextual but then they went and made it canon or damn near close enough, after which I didn't watch the show anymore, lol. *eyeroll* I guess we have enough female role models, so I can allow the lesbian community to have this one...but still, I'm upset!
I just didn't like how someone in a position of power, possessing supposedly "masculine" qualities HAD to be a lesbian. God forbid that a heterosexual woman have those qualities. (Hope I didn't offend btw)
Lol, don't worry, I agree with your comment, no offense taken!
But my main issue was that I loved the idea of a show about two women who were good friends and stood together against the world and would die for each other. There are so many shows with that dynamic between guys [Hercules is an obvious example] that I really felt the void in the female market, and I was disappointed when they made it a romantic relationship. It was still a ground-breaking idea on television, but it wasn't as 'accessible' anymore, not to me, anyway.
She almost represents the sort of woman I wish I could be
ITA. Marguerite is the epitome of who I'd love to be. [ Marguerite picspam] Some of the characters on tv are too good to be true and I could never see myself in their shoes but she's so different and unique and just plain wonderful.
Bwahahaha I love how easy it is for Marguerite to get to Ned. To be quite honest, it speaks to her excellent judge in character in so many ways. She reads them, and then behaves accordingly or does what she needs to to keep them in line, especially if she thinks they're getting too close to her. She's my hero XDXDXD
ILU TOO, BB! *HUGGLES* YAY FOR RANDOM TLW RAMBLING!
He mellows soon enough, though, but Challenger maintains the superior attitude for quite a while, lol.
SO TRUE. Summerlee always gave off that grandfatherly vibe, especially with the way he watched out for her. Was it in Nectar when he got sick from the bee sting and Marguerite pretended to be Anna for him? I thought it was such an incredibly sweet moment, and she always did handle him with kid gloves. It's too bad they didn't keep him around more. Broke my heart at the end of Season 1 :(
Veronica pisses me off. I mean, how many times does Marguerite save her ass and she still gets on her case? She rarely thanks her when Marguerite puts herself in danger to save their lives, and just takes advantage of her, it's ridiculous.
AGREED. I'm not sure if with Veronica it's a matter of jealousy or naivete in some ways. She's probably always thought of herself as being remarkably capable for having survived in the jungle all these years (and kudos to her for being able to do so), but in comes Marguerite being able to do so just as well but without the jungle tart outfit XD And I also think that this is where Veronica is probably a bit simplistic in nature. Marguerite is a complex woman to say the least, and Veronica had her pegged right from day 1 as this devious, selfish, thoughtless, jewel-obsessed woman. So to have other sides to Marguerite's nature or even to have a defense mechanism where she's just acting that way probably confuses Veronica. I don't think she gets that. She thinks that what you see is what you get, and that's it.
There are so many shows with that dynamic between guys [Hercules is an obvious example] that I really felt the void in the female market, and I was disappointed when they made it a romantic relationship.
Oh TOTALLY. I think that was another reason why it bothered me with Xena was that Hercules held their guy/guy relationship strictly platonic (slash fans would beg to differ but WHATEVER) but they felt they had to take a sexual route with the two women's relationship. It just... disappointed me I think.
Btw, thanks for the Marguerite picspam :D :D :D And I love ALL the points you make about her, because it's so true. I think I like Marguerite because she's not one-dimensional. Her morals can be somewhat flexible but when it comes down to it, she's true to herself. She's also proven herself time and time again, and since that time she sold Veronica to Jakoba (okay maybe that's where Veronica's still being petty and CHILDISH), she hasn't really done anything that insane.
Hercules held their guy/guy relationship strictly platonic (slash fans would beg to differ but WHATEVER)
Guys can be buddies and nobody except slashers make anything of it. But with women, there's always that speculation because women can't be friends on tv, noooo.
they felt they had to take a sexual route with the two women's relationship.
This is somewhat random and not entirely related to our conversation, but your comment about women's relationships reminded me of this rant [under #3. strong female characters]. Society has these double standards about the attitudes people hold towards men and women.
Was it in Nectar when he got sick from the bee sting and Marguerite pretended to be Anna for him? I thought it was such an incredibly sweet moment, and she always did handle him with kid gloves. It's too bad they didn't keep him around more. Broke my heart at the end of Season 1 :(
Yes, Nectar it was. Oddly enough, since it was royal jelly they were after, so why call it 'nectar'? Unless they meant it in a metaphorical sense.
Summerlee didn't do much for me as a standalone character, but his scenes with Marguerite were what made me like him. She was able to be a little softer, a little more unguarded around him, and he was good for her in a way none of the others could be. *sads*
I'm not sure if with Veronica it's a matter of jealousy or naivete in some ways.
I think in season 3, it's jealousy. A few fics I've read look at how she feels lost and alone after Ned goes missing, and while I don't like the idea, I can see how she might think it's unjust that MARGUERITE finds someone to love and cherish her, despite her faults, but Veronica is left on her own, despite always trying to lead an honorable life and being pleasant and helping others. That attitude conflicts with her views of herself a good person, so it's buried but of course, it ends up being expressed in various bouts of bitterness or callousness to Marguerite.
Jaclyn's fic To Hold is what I was thinking of, btw.
in comes Marguerite being able to do so just as well but without the jungle tart outfit XD
LOL. I did think Marguerite's attire was impractical... I wouldn't advocate Veronica's get up but I'd die of heat exhaustion if I were wearing Marguerite's clothes in the jungle. *g*
Btw, thanks for the Marguerite picspam :D :D :D And I love ALL the points you make about her, because it's so true.
*bounces* I'm happy you liked it! :D
My line of thought is that yes, Veronica had it tough surviving in the jungle but that was all about basic survival skills. Master those and you're golden.
Marguerite had a much tougher life, with people out to betray and kill her, and in circumstances just as dangerous as Veronica's, if not more so- everyone knows dinosaurs are dangerous, but how do you know which human can be trusted or which will put a knife in your back the moment you let your guard down?
Due to their upbringing, the fact that Veronica turned out as she did, tough and principled and all that, is no surprise.
That Marguerite can deal with all her baggage and issues and rise above them to feel genuine compassion for others, to provide aid when needed, to risk her life when every lesson in life taught her to use others to preserve her life, not the opposite- that to me is so amazing. Definitely more worthy of admiration and respect than 'oh, Veronica managed to live for eleven years on her own'. I'm not diminishing that accomplishment, but you can't compare her to Marguerite and find her superior when she hasn't faced the same challenges. If she'd been in Marguerite's place, I wonder how she would've turned out. You can't judge a person til you've walked in their shoes.
This is somewhat random and not entirely related to our conversation, but your comment about women's relationships reminded me of this rant [under #3. strong female characters].
I read your rant and I honestly couldn't agree more. I mean, is it wrong to admire or even respect a woman and not have it turn into a "ZOMG YOU LOVE HER?!" thing? I can even find a woman beautiful and not have it be sexual, you know? I'm the same as you. Sure there's physical beauty but it's the character that I think really brings it home. You could have some hot chick but if she's a twit, I wouldn't admire or respect her. I'm not sure why women are always reduced to just looks and even worse is when other women do it to each other. It's quite aggravating -.-
That attitude conflicts with her views of herself a good person, so it's buried but of course, it ends up being expressed in various bouts of bitterness or callousness to Marguerite.
I think you said it best a while back how Veronica saw everything in black and white. Marguerite's shade of grey is more than her poor isolated brain can handle XDXDXD Again, as you said, not to belittle her accomplishments, but I think at times, Veronica is probably also intimidated by Marguerite. Not only is she physically attractive, she's intelligent, and quite capable of surviving (even if you threw her out in the jungle I dare say). So Veronica, for all her vine-swinging, dagger-throwing ways, doesn't know what to make of her. Besides, we know Marguerite would win in a whip war ;)
Sure there's physical beauty but it's the character that I think really brings it home. You could have some hot chick but if she's a twit, I wouldn't admire or respect her.
And that is a cue to bring out one of my favorite quotes [stolen from speckles]: 'it's beauty that captures your attention, personality that captures your heart'. SO TRUE.
The sad thing is that women are just as guilty of this kind of narrow-mindedness as men. You'd think we'd stick together, but for some reason, but no, it's always 'success is determined by teaming up with the guys'. The saddest thing, I think, is on one of the Survivor seasons, there was ONE GUY and like, six or seven women. With those odds, you'd definitely think a woman would take out the top spot, right? Wrong. The dude played them all against each other and ended up winning. I am so disgusted.
So Veronica, for all her vine-swinging, dagger-throwing ways, doesn't know what to make of her
That brings up one of my pet peeves- Veronica seemingly carrying only one knife with her. I mean, I know her costume doesn't allow for many hiding spots, but tactically, it's rather weak. Once you throw the knife, you're relying on hand-to-hand with who knows how many enemies. *eyeroll*
Also, I never thought of her as being intimidated, but... interesting idea, that. It's probably less intimidation than just wariness. You don't know where you stand with a woman like Marguerite. The guys are all straight-forward. They're different from the jungle men, but predictable in their own ways. Marguerite is different from anyone she's ever met before; she acts like an enemy but behaves like a friend when it really matters and Veronica doesn't know how to reconcile the two, lol.
Oh, my heart glees a little when I think of Marguerite and her whip. They didn't bring it out to play often enough, IMHO. I only clearly recall it in The Games and The Source. *pouts*
Also, speaking of the two women taking each other on- I was so dissatisfied with their fight in Prodigal Father. Veronica beat her easy. It wasn't til I read a fic where it occurred to me- 'oh, right, Marguerite suffered a head injury, it could be impeding her fighting skills, right?' But still. *frowns*
You'd think we'd stick together, but for some reason, but no, it's always 'success is determined by teaming up with the guys'.
You know, they always talk about men being competitive but I think women are just as bad at times, especially around other women. I'm not sure I get it but I'm sure I'm guilty of it XDXDXD
It also reminds me of a scenario where a girlfriend/wife meets the mistress or other woman in a relationship. Somehow the woman automatically is the bitchwhore who seduced her man and blahblahblah. I find it ridiculous that the man somehow is blameless in this. Why is it that women do this to each other? I mean, both the adulterers are guilty here, but why is it that the adulterous woman gets more of the blame if not all?
Marguerite deserves an episode where she uses the whip to win the day. In fact, I'm surprised that she wouldn't have used it more often in her survival in the jungle given her prowess with it!!!
I still think Marguerite could've taken Veronica on if Marguerite were truly fighting. Physically, Veronica has the edge, but Marguerite has the cunning of... very cunning people XDXDXD
I think the problem is that 'competitiveness' is acceptable in men but not women. Women aren't allowed to be ambitious. So they gotta cover it up and it gets expressed as cattiness, pettiness, this fakeness that precedes a knife-in-the-back at the first opportunity, and the best target for this is other women because they are also playing by or at least bound by the same unwritten rules.
Somehow the woman automatically is the bitchwhore who seduced her man and blahblahblah. I find it ridiculous that the man somehow is blameless in this
ITA. I hate that double standard, I can't understand why the wife/girlfriend wouldn't feel more betrayed by her partner who is supposed to be committed to her and love her and care for her. There are stronger bonds there and more reason to be outraged and disappointed and bitter with the partner than with some random woman who, yes, should've been more decent and moralistic but who ultimately owes you nothing, right?
Although I remember a raging debate with a school friend over the Izzie/George/Callie love triangle [I'm sorry for bringing up Grey's again!] where I was flabbergasted at her defending Izzie by saying 'You have the right to look for love and do whatever it takes to be happy'. I mean, okay, but here the other woman really was acting way more reprehensibly than the guy and I was just thinking, 'If you gotta destroy someone else's happiness to be fulfilled, there is something wrong with you'. And now the idiot is having a pseudo-relationship with a FRAKKING GHOST and my passionate hate for this show has reached new levels. Sorry for dragging you down with me. :P
Omg, I was watching Barbarians at the Gate and it just HURT ME how useless the writers made her. She's an awesome shot with a gun, 'k? And yet she emptied her gun and only took down one guy. UGH UGH UGH. Contrast that with her butt-kicking in The Chosen One and I am PISSED. Yes, I know she had an arrow wound in her leg, but still.
ITA with your last paragraph. If she were firing on all cylinders as usual, Marguerite would totally find a dirty way to defeat her. :P Although I think in some ways, Veronica would be a tougher opponent for her than the guys because they'd be more 'honorable' about it whereas I'm sure Veronica isn't so concerned about etiquette and all that, lol.
Btw, do you know wtf this 'Marquess of Queensbury' thing is with Roxton? They mentioned it in Prodigal Father and Prophecy and I'm so confused, although I gather it's something to do with boxing...? Or...something...?
*nodnod* I'm so used to the lovable, supportive Summerlee that when I rewatched it, I was surprised at his attitude towards her at the start.
