PSA: Hide Yer Damn PIN

May 30, 2011 10:51

So I got this phonecall at 9:30am on Sunday. It was one of those creepy computer voices telling me that it was calling to tell me that some person attempted to access my bank account using my debit card information. The attempt was not successful, but they froze my account for my protection and advised me to visit my friendly local banker first thing Monday morning to get a new debit card.

Now, I had finally fallen asleep somewhere near 7am, so I was far from functional (i.e. severely drugged out of my gourd and groggy as hell). I kinda shrugged, decided it was a Monday thing since they had taken care of it, and crawled back to bed.

I didn't even think about it again until that night, when I set my alarm so I could get up in the morning and get a new card. Then I started to get a little anxious, a bit paranoid, and very insecure. I spent all night panicking and worrying, as I tend to do these days.

So I was in quite rough shape by the time the bank opened at 9:30 this morning. The nice receptionist got me a chair, and a cup of tea, while things got sorted out. Now I have a shiny new card, a new PIN, and carte blanche to be as rude as I want if someone doesn't get the hell away from me if I'm using a debit machine.

I always cover the keypad with my other hand when using debit, but apparently that's just not good enough. It sucks, but I guess I'll be using cash more often.

Take it as my PSA for the week: hide your PIN from other shoppers, security cameras, and cashiers; be rude if you have to. Trust no one.
