Yes, you see a recurring theme, and it's about one of my favorite things: books!!
I love books. I love the look of them, the smell of them, the feel of holding them in my hands, the sound of them as I flip through the pages and the satisfying thud of the cover closing after a good read. I love the look of them on the bookshelf. There isn't anything I don't like about books. Put me in a bookstore, and I'm in heaven. So many choices! Then there's the smell of the paper and ink, the leather journals, the smell of the photograph-ink of calendars. I could keep waxing poetic, but you'd get bored with this post very quickly.
Like me, my eldest son, Eddie, loves books. The problem is, he never has anywhere to store them. As a result, some of his books are in really rough shape. Not long ago, I gave Eddie one of my smaller bookshelves, but it wasn't big enough to hold everything he owns, so we ended up with an old bookcase filled beyond it's capacity and books stacked everywhere. That poor old bookcase finally exploded Monday night. So, since we had to take money out of Eddie's account to buy him a computer that will accommodate his graphic design classes, we took extra money out to buy him two, brand-new, five-shelf bookcases. Granted, they're the cheap, assemble-yourself variety (don't even get me started on assembling those things!), but they'll work for his needs. As his mom, I love that he has room for all of his books without the shelfs being crammed to the hilt, and all of his books are contained in one place! My dining room has now officially turned into a library, with bookshelves along the walls and three desks to accommodate three college students: me, Eddie, and Dave.
Speaking of books, I've been hitting the college books hard and heavy. I've just about completed my Ethical Situations in Business course; I'm just waiting for the final approval. Meanwhile I'm already halfway through my Legal Issues in Business Organizations course. I have two papers to write for this course, as well. I have to say, the Good Lord knew what He was doing putting me in the fifth grade last year. By helping the children work on their writing skills, I resharpened my own skills, which were a little rusty from 30 years of idleness. I aced my first college essay, and I nearly aced the second one. I inadvertently left out one important piece of the ethics program I developed, so I just needed to fill that in and resubmit it. Overall, I'm really happy with my progress.
The other side of books, the darker side, if you will, are the bookkeeping books. Ugh. I had to pay bills today, but I can't complain at all It feels good to have things paid and current. For many years, we relied on my pitiful, part-time $8.50/hour job to live on, and things were absolutely dismal. We weren't current on anything because we couldn't be. With the help of family and friends, and God looking after us, we pulled through. It's still rough, but I have a potential job lurking in the shadows, so the hardest days may be behind us. I'm not sure how, or if, this will work out, but if it does, we'll be sighing a big sigh of relief.
And so that's about all for my ramblings tonight. Nothing earth-shattering, exciting, or record-breaking. Just my life as it is.
Good night, Friends.
