Yesterday, I was hired as a new life/health producer for AFLAC insurance.
No one is more shocked than I am at that statement. I've never seen myself as an insurance agent or as a salesperson, in general. Sales have never been my forte. Ed, on the other hand, could sell the shirt off his back in less than fifteen minutes. He has a natural flare for relating to people, and he's a lot more outgoing than I am. I tend to be very reserved until I get to know someone. Still, I wanted a change in career, and I asked the Lord to please lead me to the place He wanted me to be, and here I am at AFLAC. Whether or not I like the job and feel comfortable with it remains to be seen.
Before I can hit the road, I have to take a pre-licensing course. After that comes a state licensing exam to become a licensed agent. Then, once I'm licensed, I have a week-long training at the insurance academy in Okemos. So I figure right around Halloween, I should be setting up appointments and meeting with clients. I admit I'm a bit anxious and unsure of myself. I have absolutely no experience to draw on in this field. Everything is new, so I'm going to feel like I'm flying by the seat of my pants for a while, and that's not a feeling I deal with very well. But I'm about to learn how! It's a chance to build confidence in learning new things!
Right now, I'm taking a brain break. When the lady who hired me said this material was going to be boring, I truly did believe her, but it's worse! It really is as dry as a popcorn fart. It's not hard, it's just not terribly interesting. I'm just glad it will only take a week, as I am still plugging away at my college courses, as well. Fortunately, I have those well in hand. In fact, I have a conference call with my mentor this evening, and he'll be happy to know I'm about two weeks ahead of schedule, and I'm just about ready to hand in my first essay already. He seems like a jolly person, and he's very easy to get along with, so that makes my college experience easier.
Well, I have a little bit more time in this break, and then I must get back to it. I have to complete a certain amount each day to keep on schedule, and I'm lagging a bit. You know it's boring when a motivated person like me can hardly bear to face it. LOL.
