Fred smiled as she took the small packet from Giles' hand and opened it after looking at the postmark. Leave it to her mother to write to her before she had even left the country. There was letter was telling her that her mother and father had talked it over and would be using their Hawaii fund for their tickets to England because we can go to Hawaii any year, but our daughter is only going to get married once.
There was also something in there that her mother wanted her to have, according to the letter, so Fred upended the envelope over her hand. A small box fell out and inside was a locket along with a note - To put your and Rupert's pictures in, to replace the locket you lost. Fred smiled and put the locket on before hurrying upstairs. The apple locket she had worn for so long had been taken from her on Pylea, but this...this would mean so much more.
After changing into a pair of jeans and a knit top, she pulled her hair back into a ponytail, figuring that since everyone knew about the hickey, there was no use hiding it. It was started to fade already anyway. She then put on her sneakers and hurried downstairs, the wonderful smell of the cooking chicken hitting her nose even before she entered the kitchen.
"Smells wonderful," she said. "What are you making, and can I help?"
“Chicken and salad,” Giles told her. “I figured we should eat something light since we might be doing a lot of running.” He put out a few carrots and gave Fred a knife. “If you could cut those up, I would love you forever. Well, all right, I’ll love you forever anyway but it would be nice if you could cut them up for me.”
He picked up a green pepper and took it to the sink to wash. Then he dried it off before bringing it back to the counter. “How did you like your first day?” he asked as he started to cut the pepper into thin strips. When he came to the seeds, he cleaned them out before he started to cut the pepper again. “Are you happy with everything there? Is there anything you need?”
When he finished with the pepper, he placed it in the salad bowl and went to the oven to check the chicken. “Are you happy here?” he quietly asked as he closed the oven door. “New country and living arrangements, you know.”
Fred grinned at him as she took the knife and carefully peeled the carrots before beginning to slice them. "It went well, I think. Everything is worked out with Martin now, and everyone else is working on their projects. I really love being in a lab again." She stopped cutting for a moment and raised her eyebrows as she looked over at the man she loved. "And I really like my boss. He's a good man."
She finished cutting the carrots as he checked the chicken, putting it into the salad bowl and then picking up a towel to wipe her hands. When he asked her whether she was happy there, she put it back down and walked over to him, cupping her hands to his face.
"I love being here with you," she told him softly. "You...you've made me the happiest I've been in a long, long time. You've given me so much, and I feel like I've known you forever, and we could be anywhere and it wouldn't matter, as long as I'm with you. England is wonderful, and you're wonderful. I love you."
