Fred listened at Rupert made his phone calls. He truly seemed to be in his element, organizing everyone and making sure they knew what to be prepared to do. She smiled at him, trying not to reach out and touch him while he was speaking. Glancing over, she saw Martin looking their way, so she quirked an eyebrow at him as if to say, What? He just grinned at her and turned away as Rupert finished his calls.
Fred smiled down at him, resting her hand on his shoulder for a moment. "Maybe we ought to schedule a few late nights and find out," she told him softly before stepping back one step as his hands slipped from her, just in case anyone decided to look up from their work.
"I love you too," she told him after he gave her a kiss. "I'll see you in fifteen."
Once he was gone, she quickly cleaned up the area where she had been working, putting a lid on the dish with the finger and placing it in cold storage along with the slide and the gel. She then got a forensics field kit out of the supply closet as well as a couple of other analyzers.
As she passed Martin, he looked up. "Everything okay? Anything I can help with?"
"I have to go out on a field assignment with some of the other department heads - there's been a demon sighting at a village. Can you make sure that everything in the department is locked up when everyone goes home tonight?"
"Sure," he said with a nod. "And Ms. Burkle, I'm really sorry about what I did this morning."
She smiled. "It's okay. And you call me Fred."
After putting everything she was taking with her in a shoulder bag, she slung it over her shoulder and headed to Giles' office, where she knocked on the door.
When he got back to his office, Giles quickly finished up the paperwork that needed to be signed, and sent, that day. He placed them in Andrew’s inbox and cleaned up the clutter on his desk. When Fred knocked, he told her to come in and stood from his desk. “I’m finished here so we should go out to my vehicle and head home before the traffic gets too bad,” he said.
He took Fred the same way they had came in that morning. When they got to his car, Giles unlocked, and opened, the passenger side door and let Fred get in before he went around to the other side. Once inside, he loosened his tie and gave her a smile. “I figured we could eat and change our clothes when we get home,” he explained as he pulled out of his parking spot. “It’s hard telling how long we’ll be out there. Demons, as you probably know, can be quite unpredictable.”
Giles pulled the car out of the parking lot and started in the direction of their flat. He reached over and took Fred’s hand in his and sighed. “I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you earlier,” he said, glancing over at her. “I should have never done that. I was worried about Ethan having escaped. And don’t because of him turning me into a demon, but because of you. Ethan… he doesn’t like it when I’m happy and I don’t want him hurting you. And I was a bit scared he was going to do something to you and I can’t lose you, Fred. I never want to lose you.”
Fred looked over at Giles, tightening her hand around his as they drove to the flat. "I know," she replied to his apology. "From the sound of it, I wouldn't want to meet Ethan either - everything that he's done to you..."
She shook her head at the thought of someone wanting to hurt Rupert the way Ethan had hurt him. She was glad that he was being held in Nevada, far away from them, and a dark part of her rather hoped that whatever they were doing to him, it was painful.
"You won't lose me, Rupert," she promised him. "Ever. Don't know if I told you this, but I can handle a crossbow pretty well now. I'd shoot him in several places, including a few painful ones, before I'd let him get anywhere near me. That, and I have a few experiments I would mind trying on a human guinea pig."
Since it was mid-afternoon, they were able to get back to the flat fairly quickly. Once inside, Fred set down her bag and looked over at Giles. She knew that they didn't have time to do anything because they needed to get ready before the others arrived, but she had been wanting to something very badly since the lab, so she went over to him and wrapped her arms around him.
"You won't lose me," she repeated, giving him a deep kiss. "Together in everything, right?"
The kiss made Giles moan and he placed his hands on her arse to pull her closer. No woman before had made him this randy and he was afraid Fred was going to be the death of him. “Everything. I’ll always be by your side, my love,” he murmured against her lips. He held her tightly against him for a few moments before reluctantly letting her go.
“I’ll go start supper,” Giles said before bending over to pick the day’s letters from the floor. He shuffled through them and held one out for Fred. “Looks like you have a post from your parents.” When Fred took it from his hand, Giles placed the rest of them on the hallway table before going upstairs to change out of his suit and into a pair of jeans and jumper.
When he got to the kitchen, he looked in the icebox and tried to decide what to make. Giles figured something light so he pulled out the fixings for a salad, along with a few thawed chicken breasts. He prepared the chicken and placed it in the oven before he started to cut up a tomato as he hummed to himself.
Fred smiled as she took the small packet from Giles' hand and opened it after looking at the postmark. Leave it to her mother to write to her before she had even left the country. There was letter was telling her that her mother and father had talked it over and would be using their Hawaii fund for their tickets to England because we can go to Hawaii any year, but our daughter is only going to get married once.
There was also something in there that her mother wanted her to have, according to the letter, so Fred upended the envelope over her hand. A small box fell out and inside was a locket along with a note - To put your and Rupert's pictures in, to replace the locket you lost. Fred smiled and put the locket on before hurrying upstairs. The apple locket she had worn for so long had been taken from her on Pylea, but this...this would mean so much more.
After changing into a pair of jeans and a knit top, she pulled her hair back into a ponytail, figuring that since everyone knew about the hickey, there was no use hiding it. It was started to fade already anyway. She then put on her sneakers and hurried downstairs, the wonderful smell of the cooking chicken hitting her nose even before she entered the kitchen.
"Smells wonderful," she said. "What are you making, and can I help?"
“Chicken and salad,” Giles told her. “I figured we should eat something light since we might be doing a lot of running.” He put out a few carrots and gave Fred a knife. “If you could cut those up, I would love you forever. Well, all right, I’ll love you forever anyway but it would be nice if you could cut them up for me.”
He picked up a green pepper and took it to the sink to wash. Then he dried it off before bringing it back to the counter. “How did you like your first day?” he asked as he started to cut the pepper into thin strips. When he came to the seeds, he cleaned them out before he started to cut the pepper again. “Are you happy with everything there? Is there anything you need?”
When he finished with the pepper, he placed it in the salad bowl and went to the oven to check the chicken. “Are you happy here?” he quietly asked as he closed the oven door. “New country and living arrangements, you know.”
Fred grinned at him as she took the knife and carefully peeled the carrots before beginning to slice them. "It went well, I think. Everything is worked out with Martin now, and everyone else is working on their projects. I really love being in a lab again." She stopped cutting for a moment and raised her eyebrows as she looked over at the man she loved. "And I really like my boss. He's a good man."
She finished cutting the carrots as he checked the chicken, putting it into the salad bowl and then picking up a towel to wipe her hands. When he asked her whether she was happy there, she put it back down and walked over to him, cupping her hands to his face.
"I love being here with you," she told him softly. "You...you've made me the happiest I've been in a long, long time. You've given me so much, and I feel like I've known you forever, and we could be anywhere and it wouldn't matter, as long as I'm with you. England is wonderful, and you're wonderful. I love you."
