“Where is Captain Reynolds?” Niska’s face loomed in front of his.
“Floating out to space somewhere.”
“You disposed of him?” Niska sneered. “That seems unlikely.”
“Always wanted my own boat,” Jayne shrugged as best he could seeing he was all tied up.
“Ambition is good,” the maniac smiled at him. “But I don’t believe you could defeat the stubborn Captain Reynolds and his second in command.”
“Circumstance beat ‘em for me and the boat’s mine now.”
“If the boat is yours - so is the retribution.”
“That don’t hardly seem fair.”
“Life isn’t fair and that’s the way I like it,” the elderly crime boss leered at him and beckoned to the man standing in the doorway. “Shall we discuss what you aren’t telling me?”

“We can’t leave him there,” Kaylee was horrified.
“No we can’t,” Inara agreed. She wasn’t sure she trusted Jayne not to reveal how vulnerable they were. Adelai Niska was notorious as a torturer and Jayne was a survivor, he would do what he needed in order to live. “Perhaps we can negotiate with Niska for Jayne’s release.”
“I don’t think that’s possible,” Book said. “The Captain’s actions showed that Niska could be defied. For a man like him, that is a weakness. He has to make an example of those that disobeyed him.”
“Jayne didn’t do anything ‘cept what the Captain told him.”
“It doesn’t matter to Niska. Anyone of would have done as a substitute. Jayne was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“Then we have to go get him,”
“But how?” the Shepherd studied the plan in front of him. “There is sure to be heavy security.”
“The Captain and Jayne would just go straight in.”
“With guns blazing, which is hardly an option for us,” the Shepherd mused.
“If we get to Jayne, we give him the guns and he can shoot folks.” Kaylee studied the schematics of the skyplex and totally missed the startled look he gave her.

“I couldn’t do it Jayne,” Kaylee plucked nervously at the blanket covering him and he frowned at her.
“Couldn’t do what?”
“Shoot those fellas.”
“You did plenty of other things to help get me out.” He still couldn’t quite believe they’d actually come back and got him. The smart thing would’ve been to run like hell and not look back. Most folks would’ve done that, maybe even Mal would’ve if it were Jayne left there. He knew gorramn well that even though Kaylee had no other notion except to help him, ‘Nara and the Shepherd might have had other reasons for rescuing him.
“I know,” Kaylee nodded. “But there’s only four of us now and me and you are the ones gonna be doing most of the crime. I won’t be much good if I don’t even hold a gun proper or shoot it at anyone. And I couldn’t Jayne. Those fellas were right in front of me, maybe going to kill me and I still couldn’t even pull the trigger.”
