Sunday
So the Nuke events were over. Many folks left the next morning, but I booked three nights in the hotel.
I am very glad I did. ;)
It was nice to have a day where we had no agenda, no time we had to be up, etc. We went out for breakfast at the same place Ron had discovered yesterday. Then we went walking to Times Square and Central Park.
Before we get to the beauty that is Central Park, some general observations about Manhattan:
It smells bad. There is a constant garbage/sewer smell that you kind of force yourself to get used to after awhile.
Drivers constantly honk their horns. It’s become a bad habit. I’m not talking about blaring horns, but short blasts all the time. Hesitate to make that right-hand turn and it’s guaranteed someone will honk at you - it doesn’t matter that you’re waiting for someone to cross the street.
We lost count of how many languages we heard. "Melting Pot" doesn't begin to cover it. But you know those basic words that people think are crucial to learn in the native tongue to get around? You know, like, "where is the bathroom?" It seems that one word most foreigners can say is "Starbucks." ;)
OK, back to the park. Ron hadn’t realized how close he’d been, or he would have ventured there yesterday. I’m glad we discovered it together instead.
Central Park is 843 acres, or 6% of Manhattan’s total acreage. It has seven bodies of water totaling 150 acres, 250 acres of lawns, and 136 acres of woodlands.
I took a few pictures, so I’ll let them do the talking:
The rest We only saw maybe about 1/4 of the park, but it was better than we had expected.
As we headed back into the city for a late lunch, we spotted a dog walking itself. Seriously. The owner was nearby, but the dog was holding its own leash. They would stop at an intersection, and the dog would drop the leash and wait. When the owner gave the signal, the dog picked up its leash and began walking again. Too cute!
We were exhausted by the time we ate and made it back to the hotel. Ron took a nap while I checked my e-mail, etc. After dark, we walked back to Times Square just to get one last overdose of lights and multi-story ads. ;)
The next day, it was back to PA and reality until Pittsburgh Comicon the next weekend…
