Mum has fallen down on the Duck Report lately. But every now and again, she surprises us...
Duck Report 12 12th June 2022
It has been some time since my last Duck Report as it has taken a while to get used to empty fields and no animals to look after. Of course we still have the dogs, one duck and two barn cats. (blythe note: Twix the pony has found a new home with a farmer's wife in the next township over, and the sheep were sold to another farmer who will continue to use them for wool)
Roxie Rocket Ship had puppies who are now 4 weeks old and just starting to run around. (blythe note: apparently, they are fantastic hole-diggers)
We have had a lot of wet weather which has been great for the veg patch where everything is growing except the asparagus, for some reason. This year, we seem to be getting less quantity. I think maybe the patch is due for a dressing of manure.
The fences are all gone and gates are all sold. It is amazing how much stuff we had accumulated to do with fencing. And due to inflation, the second-hand stuff sold for more than when I bought it.
I am still rehoming dozens of chipmunks and squirrels, all of which are driving the dogs crazy. (blythe note: Mum has humane cages set up all over the place. Then she takes her unwanted guests and releases them in a regional forest a few miles away)
The wild birds have all produced babies in record numbers to the extent we are using 20 lbs. of wild bird feed every two weeks. They are more expensive than the domestic animals, but they do provide great entertainment.
My path is finally coming together. I have almost completed the excavations and in the process have dug up the lightning rod for the house, one electric cable, three telephone lines, and a mess of tree roots from the blue spruce. I am now ready for gravel and sand, so the end is in sight.
Now the barn is empty, the building department tells me I can convert it into an apartment. (blythe note: YAY!) But they will not allow me to sever another lot. (blythe note: BOO!)
This spring has been very English with lots of rain and cool temperatures.
Also, some wild turkeys dropped by the back porch for tea...
