Old (lack of) skills and the summer urge

Back to school.  It was a pleasant enough day, but I think I have to conclude that I was not meant to teach PE.  Not that surprising as I hated the class when I was a kid/teen.  Today we did running.  Yep, running.  I'm actually kind of grateful because it requires next to no equipment.  However, the main purpose of the lesson was to figure out the best way to run.  I go back and forth about whether I think that's a valuable thing to be learning at ten years old.  We didn't get through the lesson, but that's pretty much par for the course what with the lessons being written as if you have a full 40 minutes and no delays.  It's only a six week course and we have six more lessons, so it'll all work out.

In other news, I'm getting my summer traveling itch.  The world is huge and I've only scratched the surface.  Granted, I'm doing better than most Americans since I'm living and working in another country, but I'm used to the UK now.  It feels everyday to me.  I want to see new places and hear new languages.  I'm consoling (torturing?) myself by reading Dervla Murphy's "Where the Indus is Young: A Winter in Baltistan" and by looking up online travel journals.  As a result of all this, I'm playing with the idea of volunteering somewhere else in Europe for a week or two this summer (I have four weeks free).  The main issue is money.  I basically have none.  One possibility might be to contact Leti (director of the group I worked with last summer: Roma Women's Association) and find out if they'd like me to come help out for a short period this summer.  If that were possible, then I could keep my costs relatively low and revisit children I've worked with before.

Another possible option is this group.  I'm not sure I can spare $300 plus travel costs, but they seem to have some great projects.

Of course, the most sensible thing would be to volunteer around here for the full four weeks.  It wouldn't cost anything extra.  And, to be fair, I'm going to send in a volunteer application to a youth group in Slough.  But, like I said, the travel bug's got me.

P.S. Kate's on nights this week, so you may hear more out of me before a month has passed.  :: gasp ::
