It was a fun, but draining weekend. Lauril came to visit for a couple days on her way down to Spain, so Kate and I took her around London on a whirl-wind tour. We got a late start, so it was really, very fast and mostly pointing out important places.
We started out by getting lunch at a well-rated Sushi place in the Covent area. It was really yummy, but an awkward experience. It turned out to be one of those places with a conveyor belt of small plates and we weren't entirely sure how it all worked. Eventually, we asked and figured out that we could order. I think we may have done it in a slightly incorrect way, but we got our food and they didn't throw us out for being clueless Americans/Brits. I've been a bit wary about getting Sushi in the UK because my experience with seafood here have been wanting. I was glad I gave this place a go though, 'cause it was excellent.
We then wandered over to
Stanford's so Lauril could buy maps for Spain. Great find of a bookshop. It's completely travel books and maps. It took me a great deal of restraint not to spend piles of money there. Kate and I gave in just slightly by purchasing one
book to share. We also ducked into
Muji, which is a bit like a mini Japanese Ikea. Lots of space-saving items. We then trailed on over to a coffee shop Kate really likes called
Coffee, Cake & Kink. It looks like it should be a terrifying place to visit, but it's really cozy, the cake is awesome, and the staff are lovely. They also have art all over the walls. Very cool.
Our tummies very full and our errand done, we started running about to show Lauril the city. We saw Trafalgar Square (and an amazing anti-human trafficking demo with giant puppets. I'll post photos later. We also saw Buckingham Palace (Lauril was less than impressed by it), Big Ben (from a distance, but beautifully lit up), the Thames, and the London Eye. It was fast, but what're you going to do when you have less than a day? The night saw us in Soho for a pint and dinner. I had a wonderful lentil and bean burger. Yum.
Needless to say, we were all exhausted by the train ride home. Sunday Kate and I took Lauril to Gatwick to see her off. We then we for some much-needed grocery shopping, ate lunch, and sort of dinked about the house for the rest of the day. Kate made a lovely apple and quince pie and we watched a
film and an episode of
Palin's New Europe. The ep we watched was on Moldova and Romania, so very appropriate. I listened carefully to see how much I could understand the Romanian being spoken.
The reason my sleep schedule is so wonky is because Kate is on nights this week and I ended up staying up with her last night until 3 AM as she adjusted her schedule. Probably shouldn't have as I have to get up at 6AM tomorrow, but there you go. :: shrug ::
Tomorrow I do my pre-visit. Scary.
