I knew this would happen . . .

I've done a lot of theatre. I know what to expect, so I have to admit I expected what happened this morning. Still, I hate feeling useless and I hate wasting time.

This morning was dedicated to hanging and focusing. However, they only have one manual genie here, so only one tech can be in the air at a time. And that tech was the guy who's employed by the school. Makes perfect sense. Then we had two guys on the ground (non-techs somehow connected to the show) for moving and fetching purposes. Then we had three of us in the booth. Yeah . . . only really needed one in the booth to run the board and patch. And, since I'm the newbie and I've never been in the booth here before, it was clear I wouldn't be running the board. It's a board I've used before (Strand GSX I think), but it's been a while and I'd have to reacquaint myself with where everything is located. So, I understand and am fine with the fact that another tech ran the board. However, I'm not so fine with the fact that I did almost nothing for three hours and was clearly not needed. Mostly, I felt like I was in the way.

We're back at quarter to three for cue to cue. I'm on sound (not my strong suit, so I'm begging the universe not to let me screw things up too badly). Hopefully I'll be of some use at that point.

Anyone who's worked with me in theatre knows that I'm used to waiting around. It's just part of how theatre works. Still, I have little patience for over-staffing a tech session when it is so abundantly clear that only X number of people are needed.

:: sigh ::

Okay, I'm done whining.

In other news, it looks like I have a promising contact for a work placement just outside of Calcutta. Yay for that and a stern look at myself to make use of that contact today.

Um, what else? I'm actively working on a short video of Norwich and such for all you back home. It's great fun surprising my housemates with the camera, although I promised I would let them view what I end up with so they have a chance to say, "no way" to bits they're in.

I'm sure I have other things I wanted to mention floating somewhere in my head, but they're being kind of elusive at the moment. Here's the next round of the "game":

Kate's post:

"I long to breathe fresh air. See the sky, hanging huge and open. Even if there are still four walls. It reminds me, one day I'll be like that again. Sprawl in large spaces I used to take for granted. No one to contain me."

- Debra Anderson / Code White.

Rob's response:

Because I was content with these poor fields,
Low, open meads, slender and sluggish streams,
And found a home in haunts which others scorned,
The partial wood-gods overpaid my love,
And granted me the freedom of their state;
And in their secret senate have prevailed

EMERSON'S HOUSE.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Joelle’s response:

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn.
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn.
Where is the boy that looks after the sheep?
"He's under the haycock, fast asleep."
Will you wake him? "No, not I;
For if I do, he'll be sure to cry."

~Nursery Rhyme

I might have one when I get home to my poetry books and walls full of images . . . but if anyone else is inspired, go for it. (:
