the return of zombie!becc

I did not sleep well last night. I'm not actually convinced I slept period, at least not for more than half an hour at a time. A couple times I got up to stare at my computer, and of course there I dozed off--I woke up one time to realize my computer had also gone to sleep. But when I lay down again I couldn't sleep.

Needless to say, this morning did not start on the best note, and my voice sounds like I've been smoking for twenty years or something. But I managed to take the dog on a lovely long walk and made it to work on time with lunch for me and a couple co-workers, so that was good at least, and the one call I got handed off spun down about five minutes after I joined, so that's also good.

I have to work a 12 on Friday, but then I get four days off so it could be worse. And of those four days, Morgan has Sunday and Monday off, so we'll have some time to spend together. Novel concept. Sunday there's a get-together at Strahd's, but Monday no one has claimed yet. We figure we'll take Buddy to the dog park or something.

Speaking of which, he was so good yesterday. I took him to the dog park but there weren't really any dogs to play with because it was the middle of the day on Tuesday. There were three, but one left shortly after we got there, one was very small and not interested in playing much, and one had such severe separation anxiety he wouldn't leave his human's side. So we said "Let's move on" and left. But there's also a trail through the park that's a fenced-in off leash area, so we headed in there and I let him run off leash. I was kind of taking chances here because we've never really done recall work with him, but he was wonderful. He got ahead of me a few times, which was fine, because there were a lot of hills and I don't do hills well. But when I told him to stop he mostly did. And the best part: A couple times he went a direction I didn't want to go. I didn't have treats with me (an embarrassing oversight) but when I said "Buddy, come!" he turned around and came back to me. More than once!

I had to repeat the command a couple times, which I know you're not supposed to do but I wasn't working on training with him, I was working on making sure he didn't disappear to somewhere I couldn't find him. It was a complete success, and I think we'll do it again the next time we take him to the dog park. The trail itself is wholly fenced in so he can't get out, which is brilliant, but there's room for him to run around and sniff everything and have a good time.

Still, though. I have to wonder who taught him all these commands, cause it sure as hell wasn't us. Who could teach him all this and then just...abandon him, or not look for him? Or...I don't even know. I wish I knew what happened before he got picked up as a stray. But we'll likely never find out.

This morning he was so sweet. I was being very zombified, and decided to lie down on my daybed to get some more rest before I had to get up and moving. As soon as I lay down Buddy jumped up into bed next to me and settled in to snuggle. He got up after a bit because he heard something, but it was still very sweet of him to come snuggle.

Five and a half hours to go. I may cave and have a Mountain Dew to try and keep me awake.
