Are You Waiting For the Music to Swell? (Spoilers for "My Mother, the Fiend" and Future Speculation)

New week, new episode, new speculation.

The Trouble with Trina

One thing that no one has pointed out yet (that I have seen) is the new information we have about Trina, and I don't mean her actual parentage (parentage which has creepy shades of Aaron/Lilly along the lines of older powerful man - at least relative - and high school girl).

What intrigued me was that we have found out that Lynne was Trina's adoptive mother not as previously implied her stepmother. This makes it a bit terrible that Lynne left nothing to Trina in her will, it makes it seem that her adoptive mother didn't actually care for her.

Now Trina is not the most wonderful of people, but it is a hard thing not to be loved by the woman who is, one way or another, your mother. Aaron is a sociopath, but even he seemed to have some kind of interest in his daughter. And Trina seemed clearly both bewildered and touched by Mary's embrace.

If Trina weren't such a bad actress, I would consider her background traumatic enough for her to be behind some of the mysteries this season. Well, that and the fact that Alyson Hannigan has another show.

Another season arc thread on the mystery of the week: Principal Moorehead is another person who "can lie right to your face and you'd never know it."

Why Do Boys Go To The Bathroom Together?

All right, we knew last week that Weevil was coming to the realization that Logan did not kill Felix and further that he and Logan need one another (not in that way L/W shippers...). We also knew that last week ended with Logan needing to even the score with Weevil.

Done and done.

Plus the boys got to smack one another around and grapple a little to get all that excess anger and tension out (again, not in that way L/W shippers...).

Now a funny thing here is that the Weevil/Logan alliance will have to remain a secret in order for them to have the best chance to find out what really happened on the bridge.

So, to recap:
Logan and Weevil fought with one another.
They suspected one another of wrongs neither committed (shooting out the X-terra's window, killing Felix, etc.).
Their alliance is cemented through a clinch in the bathroom.
And now it has to remain a secret so they can find our who killed Weevil's best friend.

And, say it with me, we all know that secrets are sexy (well, maybe in that way L/W shippers...)

I am talking tongue in cheek, of course (my own tongue, my own cheek), but I find the parallels thematically (not romantically) interesting.

Not All Secrets are Sexy

Oh, Duncan, I know that Veronica is not a particularly forthcoming person either, but you need to talk to your girlfriend.

Whether or not anything happened with Kendall, Duncan should let Veronica know that she is making some rather unsubtle passes at him. Plus, he needs not to enjoy the passes as much as he seems to. -How long should I let you sit on my lap and talk about showing me how to drive my "stick" before moving you off? - Unless, of course, Duncan is actually falling for some of these passes.

Whether or not Celeste approves, Duncan should have told Veronica he was keeping their relationship under wraps.

Also, whether or not Meg's unborn child is Duncan's, he needs to let Veronica in on why he has been spending so much time at Meg's bedside, and why he is Lizzie's go-to-guy to help out Meg.

On that angle, if Meg had a more recent boyfriend, why wouldn't Lizzie go to him?

What happened that perfect night on the beach? What promises were made?

Also, let's imagine for a moment that the baby is not Duncan's, what other man's paternity would make the pregnancy thematically interesting?

Could the baby itself have been the target of the bus crash?

Or is the pregnancy itself a red herring unrelated to the central mysteries?

We might also look for clues in Meg's bitterness.

It would be understandable if she lost her virginity to a man-boy who swore that he loved her and then dumped her for another girl shortly before she discovered she was pregnant.

Would it be as understandable if she was angry about finding "comfort" after the breakup with unknown mystery man who left her pregnant and alone.

I really hope that we do not have another older powerful man/vulnerable high school girl couple. Been there, done that, got all bloodied.

Sometimes a Conspiracy is a Conspiracy

Contrary to Keith's comments last week, this mystery of the week was a big conspiracy.

A conspiracy for the advancement of Principal Van Clemmons.

So, are our seasonal mysteries more personal (motivated by hate, love, anger) or more of a means to an end (such as political advancement, etc.)?

Bits and Bytes

Enjoyed the Mac/Cassidy interaction, natch.

Cassidy has also shown himself to be quite insightful when he observed that Kendall has always been in sales. He hope that she can sell his company as well as she has been able to sell herself.

There is more here, looking forward to it.

What does Celeste want from Duncan?

More to mull, more to mull.
