The Dangers of Working Retail.

Or: I Need To Fill Out An Accident Report.

Or, quite possibly: Indecent Exposure, Inappropriate Touching, and the Consequences Of.

I sprained a muscle in my chest this afternoon while forcing a shoe onto a mannequin. The shoe was the right size, it was just being stubborn. And the mannequin wouldn't stay still. I had to call a floor associate over to hold him (it was a boys mannequin) still while I pushed the shoe on.

Then, just a little bit later, another mannequin bit me. Kind of. More of a pinch, really.

Before I tell that story, let me go into how our mannequins work.

Hands come of off arms, arms come off of torso, torso comes off of legs and butt, legs and butt come off of metal pole up the mannequin's butt. Or piercing through their calf. Because apparently homophobia extends to mannequins as well, since none of the men have long metal poles up their butt. Neither do the kids, but since that flies in the face of the previous sentence, we'll ignore it.

So, back to the pinching mannequin.

On some of our mannequins the legs and butt are all one piece, and on others the legs and butt are in two pieces (split through the groin) that kind of hook together at the top. You can usually change them without taking the legs apart.

It's important to note that the pinching mannequin was the second kind.

In order to lift the mannequins off of the metal pole, you have to grab them, um, in a rather private area. While they're naked, or mostly naked. And when they're being stubborn and uncooperative there is a lot of wrestling and prolonged touching in inapproriate areas.

So I changed her pants and shoes (this mannequin was a woman), and was fighting to get her back onto her pole. Well, she was having none of it. And while I had my hand between her thighs (inside her pants so I could keep them out of the way of the pole) her legs shifted and the skin on my thumb got caught in the seam where her legs connected.

...

There's a red snapper joke in there somewhere, but I'll let someone else do the honors. ;P

The rest of the mannequins were just as ornery and stubborn. I spent most of my day muttering and calling them names under my breath as I changed them. You should hear the way I talk to my mannequins, lol, it cracks the floor associates right up.

But now they are all changed and pretty and I won't have to bother with it again for another few weeks. Hooray.
