Memorial Day Weekend

May 30, 2011 10:22

Can I tell you how amazing my four day weekend has been? Because really, it's been amazing. It's been so relaxing, filled with good food and friends, and lots of quality time with Mike. This has by far been the best weekend I've had in a long time.

My garden, both edible and non-edible, is in full swing right now. I got to use something out of it in a recipe for the first time on Saturday. I made from scratch chicken and dumplings, and used a lot of my herbs for the roast chicken. The roast chicken was delicious. The chicken and dumplings was good, but the ratio of dumplings to everything else was far too high. I will definitely make it again though.

Not really "my garden" but Izzy has been enjoying freshly grown vegetables as well.

I bought a big watermelon the other day and was going to use it as food to eat during the sleepover but didn't have time to cut it up. So Saturday I cut it up and realized I had more watermelon than would probably get eaten. I turned half of it into watermelon sorbet, which is just ok. It's far too sweet for my liking but still pretty good. I then went on to make watermelon rind pickles.

I'd read that these pickles were thought to be an aphrodisiac so I told Mike to be careful eating them. They did turn out pretty tasty though. After trying to find an online version of the recipe yesterday for carinn I realized that I picked the easiest, and arguably the most boring recipe for them ever. I like the way they turned out, but I'm curious now to the other spice-filled recipes out there. If I ever get another watermelon I may have to try some of the other recipes.

Oh, and shweetnettie13, I'm saving a jar of these for you. I'll give them to you when we have our freezer cooking day!

I took pictures of this but I'm not going to post them as they don't show the progress much as I'd like them too, but I've started working on tailoring my clothes to fit the new smaller me. I haven't lost any weight in a while and it looks like I will stay at this size for the near future. So I wanted to make some clothes that fit me at this size.

First up was a satin tank top I'd bought about three years ago. I took it in about four inches and while it's not "form fitting" it's far more flattering than the billowy top it was before. I wore it to the birthday party yesterday. I turned some ripped khakis into capris and took them in a bit as well. They're still too big so I'm going to work on those a bit more today. I've got two other pairs of jeans that need taken in. I've been debating on whether to just make them smaller or whether to turn them into shorts or a skirt. I still haven't decided yet though.

Plans for today include weeding the garden, and heading to home depot for supplies to finally get around to building my hop trellis. It's going to be sunny and hot so expect to see pictures of me looking like a lobster later.
