OK, it's 2:05 so the ISP gods have restored our normal broadband powahs. Arseholes. (Only one more day till our ISP cycle starts again and we get full speed back 24/7. You Americans and Brits don't know how lucky you are re your broadband service.) So now all the pics are uploaded. Get ready to view some gorgeous books! The prices are the prices I paid, not what they originally cost.
The Apple Tree by John Galsworthy
Published 1940
$4.00
* Probably my favourite cover of them all. Gorgey colours, picture, printing, fonts!
The Quiet Man by Maurice Walsh
Published 1939
$4.00
* This is the first book I knew I had to buy. The cover is marvy! Reminds me of Clarice Cliff a bit. Those trees. Can't wait to read it too. I like quiet men. (And loud men.)
The Painter-Poets by Kineton Parkes (ed.)
Published pre-1894, gilt-edged
$4.00
* It's the most beautiful book to hold. Small, soft, warm.
Inscription:
"Ethel Reid,
With loving wishes from
J. M. Rutherford.
1st Dec 1894."
* Mister J. M. Rutherford, I presume?
A Friend or Two by Wilbur D. Nesbit
Published 1915
$6.00
* The title is embossed on a metal plate that's been affixed to the cover. Art Nouveau a la Mackintosh, only not at all inside.
Inscription:
"Love from Doris
Xmas 1915"
* Awww, I wonder who she gave it to. Anyway, they died and now I have it! The printing is so '20s I'm stoked it's even older. Much prettier colours than photo shows.
First couple of pages (all are folded at edges, not cut)
* The poetry ain't much chop but the craft of the book is exquisite! Bad photos.
Contemporary American Poetry by Donald Hall (ed.)
Published 1962
$1.00
* I bought this more for the cover than the contents, shallow, shallow me. Really bad photo, colours completely misrepresented.
Summer of the Seventeenth Doll by Ray Lawler
Published 1959
$1.00
* Probably my favourite play ever studied at high school, and such a cool edition. Was always proud it was Australian, but now I see it was filmed starring non-Aussie actors: Ernest Borgnine, Angela Lansbury, Anne Baxter and John Mills! I've seen it but forgotten it.
The Gentle Arts by Jennifer Isaacs
Published 1987
$6.00
* Ugly cover, amazing book. If I didn't already know this book from Mum's (different) edition, I would never even have picked it up. Features famous Australian historical quilts and embroidery from Changi POW camps, etc. A treasure trove.
TOTAL COST: $26.00
Oh yeah, I also got three Little Golden Books for $1.00. It was really 5 for $1.00 but I couldn't find two others I liked. They were all 1980s Disney crap. The ones I got were The Pokey Little Puppy, Tawny, Scrawny Lion and Bambi (Disney but an older edition). Found no Richard Scarry nor suchlike, unfortunately.
