Recs! Get Yer Recs Here!

Going by this list, I've been eaten alive by The Avengers and X-Men. Fascinating. Anyway, for various reasons that it would take too long to explain at this juncture, I tore apart the living room this morning and removed the shelves that I absolutely despised. They're being replaced by some commercial wire shelving that's about 5 feet wide x 2 feet deep x 6 feet high. (We have a small selection in the still-not-in-place extra greenhouse - why? Because D found them at a garage sale of course. Theoretically, they're going to help organize the sheds. Let me stress the theoretically until such time as they're actually in place.) I was going to use another old set of black wire shelving in the corner (not the commercial variety - only 3 feet wide x 1 foot deep x about 5 1/2 feet tall), but D arrived home, possibly had some kind of guilt attack, and suggested that another set of the shelves could actually be cut down to fit better in the space and match up with the commercial ones. I had been thinking about ordering an extension kind of thing in a few months that would replace the older, black wire shelves and do the same thing as what he's talking about, but if he can make it relatively easily, then free is good. The black wire shelves can then instead go over to hold the printer and office supplies.

Right, so that's a very long explanation (relatively speaking) for why I have nothing to do at the moment. I mean, I can technically get to the living room and kitchen, but there's not much space and I've done as much as I can. Everything's at a standstill until he returns with the shelving - and he had something he had to do for his mother before he could start on them. *twiddles thumbs* So I'm writing a recs post. Let's see how long it takes me to write 30-40 review notes.

.: Avengers :.

Captain America/Iron Man

Pillow Biter |
valtyr [Steve/Tony, R, 1.129 words]
Summary: Written for Avengers Kink, prompt: "Steve/Tony Vampire!Steve AU. Steve is out looking for a bite to eat, and Tony's just looking for a way out."
Review Note: I'm a bit confused as to how the prompt relates, other than the fact there are vampires involved, so don't let that throw you. Quite funny - Tony's evil and merciless to those he loves, does this surprise anyone? :D

A Fic Told in Note Form | smilingskull [Steve/Tony, PG-13]
Summary: I found a fake form-thing on a friend's LJ (which you shall see in a minute) that set off a bit of a chain reaction. The result? A three-way note battle between Pepper, Tony and Steve. Complete with letterhead and different handwriting! (by which I mean different fonts.) In which there is talk of failing classes, dancing and restaurants.
Review Note: Funny epistolary fic ♥

Necessary Experience | often_adamanta [Steve/Tony, NC-17, 2.493 words]
Summary: So I saw the new Captain America movie, and they seemed to think it was quite important that we understand not only that he was a virgin, but also totally clueless when it comes to sex. Fondue, anyone? Then there's that clip at the end with Tony Stark, and I thought: there's no way Tony Stark wouldn't find out and do something about it. I couldn't find that fic anywhere online, though, so I wrote it.
Review Note: Yeah, basically, this one was bound to happen, one way or another. Steamy!

An Intermission | simmysim [Steve/Tony, NC-17, 1.728 words]
Summary: Steve wants to have sex in Tony's lab and Tony wants to work in Tony's lab.
Review Note: I can definitely see Steve having a competency kink - and poor Tony, he hasn't gotten to play with his toys in forever!

Magnetic |
misfit_fandoms [Steve/Tony/Pepper, PG-13, 18.000 words]
Summary: Tony and Pepper are in a committed relationship, everyone knows that. Tony still flirts relentlessly with Steve, though, and Steve doesn't know what to make of it. Then he starts having weird feelings about Pepper too, and he really, really doesn't know what to make of that.
Review Note: Ohhhh, there should be many, many more fics with this pairing (so to speak). Seriously, I finished reading it and immediately rummaged through the AO3 for any more with these three in a relationship. Would you like to know how many I found? None. *cries*

There is No 'I'... |
jadedoll [Steve/Tony, R, 20.053 words]
Summary: The reasons not to join the Avengers were many and varied. The problem was that when Captain America smiled at him, Tony had trouble remembering what they were.
Review Note: Typos sprinkled throughout, but not so many it isn't worth reading - particularly since it's such an engaging story line. As in, I was just distracted for half an hour re-reading bits of it while trying to figure out how to summarize 20.000+ words. I just love the last chapter before the epilogue. :D

Secrets of a Successful Marriage |
valtyr [Steve/Tony, NC-17, 24.118 words]
Summary: Tony Stark lives a double life; he's secretly the supervillain known as Iron Man. But his loving husband Steve has a few secrets of his own, as Tony is about to discover.
Review Note: Remarkably easy to keep track of who knows what, even without a scorecard! Tony has very tony-like reasons for becoming a supervillain, and Pepper has a missile habit.

Telephone | Anon [Gen, PG, 10.801 words]
Summary: Loki is (somehow) mortally injured by the latest Supernatural Monster of the Day, and (for some reason) decides to call 911 instead of just dealing with it himself. ...Except he has several SHIELD members on speed dial! THOR TO THE RESCUE.
Review Note: This fic actually features Cap since the Avenger Loki keeps calling is... Steve. Steve can't figure out Loki's game, Loki's still pulling his brother's pigtails (even if he has to do it by proxy), and Thor is kind of jealous. It's really all quite hilarious and adorable.

Images & Graphics
Steve/Tony |
gryzmolic [Steve/Tony, PG]
Summary: Whereas Steve was rather hesitant to really show affection with others around when he was with Howard - a product of the times as well as his unfamiliarity with being even slightly intimate with someone - he gets a little more used to the idea when he’s with Tony. It never really travels anywhere outside of a simple touch or an innocent kiss usually placed on a cheek, temple, or ear, and he feels a bit awkward when he shows such affection when others are present, but he doesn’t exactly try to hide it, either.
Review Note: Loved the colors especially.

Tony is a Fanboy |
superfries [Gen, PG]
Review Note: Ahahaha!! Yes, that. [eta: Link updated to new location.]

Iron Man (Tony Stark) | glockgal [Gen, PG]
Summary: I only have a bajillion arts I need to post, but I read this fic today and the fangirl in my took over. This is Vietnamese-American Tony Stark, based off the unbelievably amazing fic horns of a deer, feet of a tiger by softintelligence.
Review Note: Love the style of this one.

Thor

Chaos War |
astolat [Thor/Loki, NC-17, 34.203 words]
Summary: It was never easy to find Loki when he wanted to hide, but he wasn't doing a particularly good job of it at the moment. Probably he didn't think anyone from Asgard would be wasting their time hunting for him while the shining ones churned their way steadily through all the realm.
Review Note: Loki wages a unique war against a unique enemy. Told from Thor's POV as he tries to figure out what the hell is going on and how it's actually working.

Well, That's One Way to Get a Baby | Anon [Gen, PG-13, 12.330 words]
Summary: We have a lot of prompts like Loki never being adopted and such. Hopefully this will be a bit of an interesting spin: what if Thor found baby Loki on Jotunheim and decides to adopt him? Thor could be any age from teen to adult really when he goes to Jotunheim, kills some adult frost giants, and in the aftermath his heart grows two sizes when he finds a baby frost giant in the slaughter.
Review Note: This is ostensibly completed, but part of the main storyline feels unresolved. The author made a note that there was more to come, so I'm looking forward to that. I particularly liked the actual mythology feel to certain bits.

.: Doctor Who :.

Only My Hands to Guide Me |
such_heights [Amy/Rory, PG-13, 7.200 words]
Summary: Amy had always liked kids, provided that she could give them back at the end of the day.
Review Note: Spoilers/Fix-it for series 6.

.: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Firefly :.

Sidle Up and Smile: Index (The Ancient Slayers 'Verse) | jedibuttercup [Gen, PG-13]
Summary: Even in a world where Earth is no more, spaceships are a common mode of travel, and the government has created its own Operatives to replace the Slayers, the life of a Chosen One is not exactly easy.
Review Note: I've read the Mother's Son section and I'm loving it: Mal is Buffy's son. It even works with canon!

.: Harry Potter :.

The Guiltless | branwyn [Gen, PG-13, 25.816 words]
Summary: When Harry appears at the Welcoming Feast wearing a glamor only Snape notices, Snape decides to find out what the glamor is hiding. His investigation leads to a number of shocking revelations---both about The Boy Who Lived, and about Snape's understanding of himself. Sixth year AU.
Review Note: I think I'm drawn to these type of fics (an especially abused Harry) because someone bloody well notices and then does something about it. It was what drove me away from the canon material, actually, the fact that they kept sending him back to the Dursley's. Drove me absolutely mad. I thought this was quite a good one for the way Snape has to confront some of his own prejudices and assumptions without being too simplistic about the situation. (Man, there's a better way to say that, but it's the best I can do at the moment. Good fic! Go read!)

.: Inception :.

Good to the Last Drop | jibrailis [Arthur/Eames, NC-17, 22.377 words]
Summary: "You are the bloody devil himself," he accuses. Arthur pats him congenially on the arm, but then stops in case it sends Eames into an unyielding fit of lust. He retracts his hands and puts them in his pockets. "We can wait," he promises. "I'll make it worth your time.
Review Note: Oh dear lord. The Juicebox Fic (yes, it deserves all capital letters) off the kink meme and in a regular LJ post. Definitely NC-17, definitely hilarious, and completely unforgettable. Touching poignancy even manages to sneak in there.

.: Inception/Calvin & Hobbes :.

The Physiological Response to Absurdity | starlingthefool [Arthur/Eames, PG-13, 5.691 words]
Summary: Calvin: Isn't it strange that evolution would give us a sense of humor? When you think about it, it's weird that we have a physiological response to absurdity. We laugh at nonsense. We like it. We think it's funny. Don't you think it's odd that we appreciate absurdity? Why would we develop that way? How does it benefit us?
Hobbes: I suppose if we couldn't laugh at things that don't make sense, we couldn't react to a lot of life.
Calvin: I can't tell if that's funny or really scary.
Review Note: Sequel to Lions and Tigers - the Inception crossover with Calvin and Hobbes wherein Eames is Calvin, all grown up. My reaction is best summed up with lots of inarticulate squeeing, exclamation points interspersed with occasional 1s, hearts, and general giddiness.

.: Lackadaisy :.

Images & Graphics
Lackadaisy - Fallout | ~pigeonfeather @ deviantArt [Gen, PG]
Summary: A recent Watercolor of *tracyjb's Viktor and Mordecai (human versions) from her comic, Lackadaisy.
Review Note: Gorgeous!!!

.: Sherlock Holmes :.

Ridiculous | kate_everson [Holmes/Watson, PG, 5.404 words]
Summary: John is the best retrieval expert the British Army has, and so naturally it's him that's sent in when some man with little sense of self-preservation keeps getting himself taken hostage - again, and again, and again.
Review Note: BAMF!John. :D

.: Stargate SG-1 :.

A Collection of E-Mails from the SGC Archives (the Wanky Wormhole Remix) |
beatrice_otter [Gen, PG, 3.072 words]
Summary: When highly intelligent and dedicated people get bored, things happen.
Review Note: Surely I've recced this before? No? Okay then: a funny must read epistolary fic featuring Jack, Vala, and Fandom Wank.

.: Stargate SG-1/Dragonriders of Pern :.

To Speed Where There is Space Enough |
lokei [Jack/Daniel, R, 5.665 words]
Summary: For the J/D Promptathon 2011. Prompt: Crossover with McCaffrey's Pern. First mating flight ever between two bronzes or between a bronze and a green/brown/whatever-works-for-Daniel, Jack being the bronze rider, Daniel the other.
Review Note: I tend to put off reading Pern crossovers just because I've forgotten so much of how that world works, that fics set within it tend to confuse me more than anything else. I'm happy to report that such is not the case here! I remembered and/or could glean enough from the text that it worked just fine.

.: X-Men :.

Rumination |
grim_lupine [Charles/Erik, PG-13, 2.171 words]
Summary: Erik studies him for a moment - Charles Xavier, a fascinating contradiction of a man: he is unreservedly compassionate even when he has seen into the dregs of humanity, curiously arrogant and unaware of it; he looked at Erik from the start like he was promising him everything, but even now, when Erik puts his hands on him, he sometimes flushes all over like it’s the first time he’s ever been touched. It’s addictive, wonderful, frightening. Erik wants everything and doesn’t know what to do with what he has.
Review Note: A little bittersweet (Erik isn't particularly optimistic), but wonderful and Erik's point of view is exquisite.

The Sexiest Organ is the Brain |
helensfic [Charles/Erik, NC-17, 1.613 words]
Summary: Erik's been sitting on the couch watching Charles for over an hour. It's horribly distracting, not least because Charles can't so much as take a peek inside Erik's mind to figure out why all the staring. Well. He could. But he won't. Even when Erik's thinking so hard at him that it's like a big neon sign saying LOOK RIGHT HERE, Charles won't look. (Besides, what if he did? The last thing he needs is a hard-on in the middle of a jog or a lecture, or a mental imagine he won't be able to act on for hours.)
Review Note: Telepathic enhanced sex. You know it had to go there.

Progression of a Family Portrait |
xris [Charles/Erik, PG-13, 23.230 words]
Summary: “You’re sure we can handle one more?” Hank asks from the sidelines.
Review Note: The only problem with having comics for canon is that comics writers are insane. There's also more history and intersecting story lines than you can shake a stick at, so it may come as no surprise that I had no idea that Lorna wasn't an original character until, um, just now, when I double checked (there's even notes about it at the end of chapter 6! apparently I was in a reading daze). So for those of you more familiar with canon, forgive me if part of this follows it and I don't realize it. The story here is that the movie plays out as it does and 3 years down the road, Charles ends up taking in the 5 year old mutant Lorna, who was living in an abusive home. Years later, when Lorna begins to develop a metal-based power, he has his suspicions, but says nothing. When their world spins out of control, though, and circumstances brings the forces of Professor X and Magneto back to the same side, what will be revealed and will things have a happier ending this time around?

Times Like These | luninosity [Charles/Erik, R, 2.150 words]
Summary: Based on that picture that everyone loves; see current icon. Charles wears gloves. Erik learns to appreciate picnics.
Review Note: A warm and easy fic, good for soothing away the prickles of another, more angsty reading experience.

It Takes a Heap O' Livin' |
etharei [Charles/Erik, NC-17, 15.149 words]
Summary: They have their day jobs. And then, they have this. Modern!AU in which they are the superheroes of mutantkind.
Review Note: I'm actually surprised that it's taken this long to see this variation. A lot of fun wherein the 'kids' are irrepressible as usual and everything works out in the end. *is happy*

Muttersprache | oddegg [Charles/Erik, PG, 1.014 words]
Summary: Erik wants his child to know its heritage, as early as possible, so he talks to Charles' baby bump as often as possible. In German. // A/N: (A hundred thousand thanks and küsse to day_moon who checked my German to ensure it won’t make native speakers wince in pain! Any cock-ups still there are, of course, mine.)
Review Note: No justification of mpreg required - this is purely warm and fuzzy amusement, heavy on the warm and fuzzy.

Possible Worlds | trailingoff [Charles/Erik, R, 12.000 words]
Summary: Charles woke in a different bed, in a different room. He knew instantly it was different, because Erik was close by.
Review Note: One of those fics that sends Charles back to before the beach and gives him a chance to re-do everything. The why and how are unique, and he has 3 chances - which is a good thing considering he messes up the first two. Of particular interest to me is that the first two attempts are perfectly reasonable, they just don't go as he expects.

Not So Much the Teacup |
thehoyden [Charles/Erik, NC-17, 9.073 words]
Summary: “Charles is basically the bride whisperer. It’s like he can read their minds.” (wedding planner AU)
Review Note: Sap. Well done sap. I'm so good with that.

Don't Look Down |
isabeau [Gen, PG, 303 words]
Summary: The various mutations, groovy and otherwise, of Cerebro.
Review Note: I'm glad I'm not the only one who raised an eyebrow at the blatant impracticality of Cerebro's design in the first X-Men movie.

Surely Shifted My Way |
traincat [Charles/Erik, PG-13, 7.522 words]
Summary: The one where Erik and Charles get engaged, Raven is an x-treme wedding planner and the kids get way too involved. Oh, and there are doves everywhere. Modern slightly!AU, where everyone is together and alive and happy because it's weddingfic and weddingfic is allowed to do that.
Review Note: Did I mention that I'm good with sap? This is pretty hilarious - Erik in the midst of this environment is just too funny.

Warning: WiP (Work in Progress)
The Courtship of Francine and Mr. Lehmanbot | Anon [Charles/Erik, PG-13 so far, Up to 72 comments]
Prompt: Erik learns he is the last surviving heir to an enormous Lenscherr fortune, hidden by his third-cousin-twice-removed before the war. To claim it he must marry a stipulated noble before his 30th birthday, only a month away. If he doesn't claim it, the money will go to the German (and human) government, which Erik doesn't want. Luckily he happens to have a noble on hand who fits the requirements and is a mutant... the last descendant of the House of Xavier! (Alternatively, a lawyer tracks down the only noble-blooded mutant in the USA and Charles and Erik meet for the first time at their engagement party).
Review Note: We know how often I rec WiPs, but a) this ties in to an image (below), b) it's up to 72 comments long now, c) has been regularly updating, and d) it's really, really good so far. The fic deviates from the prompt in a couple of ways. It's a future fic wherein Erik is the last descendant of the House of Magneto and, while he has money of his own, he's very displeased with the idea of the inheritance going to any government. This Erik and Charles have never met, but they do hit it off. What really sets this fic apart is the wonderful world building, the personalities of the other characters (I'm finding Emma particularly entertaining), and the suspense being built up concerning a virus - MU1 - that only attacks mutants.

eta: The WiP is now complete and available on AO3! You can find it here: The Courtship by

Video
X-Men First Class Deleted Scene
Review Note: A fuller clip of the, ah, pertinent scene. (Actual commentary in article content and the comments are - not surprisingly - eye rolling, but it's a good copy of the clip.)

There! Right There! | tlzumis [Charles/Erik, PG-13]
Review Note: Is Erik gay or European?! Utter crack vid (and hilariously so). Bear in mind that 'Carlos' is Spanish for 'Charles' - that just makes it funnier. <3

Images & Graphics
I Want You By My Side |
brilcrist [Charles/Erik, PG]
Summary: Erik-Charles Painting n Poster design i did for [...] denying the original ending.
Review Note: I came from Smallville fandom; I'm very good with denial. This denial happens to be a very lovely image.

Charles & Erik Papercrafts (Make Your Own!) |
professor_x_student [Gen, PG]
Summary: I remodel the papercraft, and made Charles and Erik. :)
Review Note: Cut out and fashion your own Charles and Erik! Complete with (or without) helmet! Re-enact your favorite beach scene fix-it!

The Royal Couple | shizuke [Charles/Erik, PG]
Summary: "Magneto and his royal family...reside in the capital of Genosha. There, he rules Earth with his iron will, and protects his dream of a world where mutants are free and celebrated as the genetic marvels they are." - House of M
Review Note: Poor Charles looks so uncomfortable! It works particularly well as an image for the WiP fic The Courtship of Francine and Mr. Lehmanbot (linked above), which the artist mentions as having in mind when drawing it.
