I'd have kicked him out of my fucking car. I mean, what the hell?

OK, just so I have it straight... you're each paying $6 a day, no matter who drives, right?

If so, and you're talking about one week's worth of driving...

He owes you $24 for 4 days. You owe him $6 for 1 day.

He owes you $18 overall.

For your "Just pay me $24 instead of $30", you're letting him off the hook for the day you didn't drive. However, it doesn't take into account that you rode with him that one day and owe him $6 for it.

But, if he drove himself and you did not ride with him, he would owe you $24 for the 4 days he rode with you.

And why I'm not editing these consecutive comments I will never know...

Yah, he owes you $24 for the 4 days, and you owe him $6 for the day you ride with him. Kind of hard to get into the wear + tear issue though. You'd be doing that anyway whether anyone rode with you or not really. But of course it does add up.

If it confuses him that much have him pay by the day. And he is using your cars consumption rate to figure what you should pay him. That would only be correct if his car took the same amount as your car does. HIs could take less or could take more, right? In order to be correct he would need to figure out his expenses for his car as well.
