OK, just so I have it straight... you're each paying $6 a day, no matter who drives, right?

If so, and you're talking about one week's worth of driving...

He owes you $24 for 4 days. You owe him $6 for 1 day.

He owes you $18 overall.

For your "Just pay me $24 instead of $30", you're letting him off the hook for the day you didn't drive. However, it doesn't take into account that you rode with him that one day and owe him $6 for it.

But, if he drove himself and you did not ride with him, he would owe you $24 for the 4 days he rode with you.

I would have him pay you, and then you pay him. More money changing hands and it is redundant, but.... might be easier on you both?

(he pays you $24, you pay him $6, in cash..... )
