*21. March*
HeeChul was tense as someone approached his cell. Today was the day they were going to try out the new drug. Today was the day he was going to die.
So HeeChul didn't even look up as the cell was opened.
"Get up!" Someone demanded and harshly pulled at HeeChul's arm.
HeeChul complied. The man, dressed in black, who had taken care of him all the time, was there to take him to the lab.
HeeChul couldn't help as his heart was racing faster and faster with each new step.
While walking along the corridor, he looked out the windows. The sun wasn't shining. The sky was gray and it looked as if it was going to rain soon.
HeeChul didn't say anything. He just stared out, trying to take in as much of the world outside as possible. He wondered if SiWon had managed to escape by now.
He hoped so.
Suddenly the man stopped in front of him and HeeChul had difficulties to stop in time. He gazed at the man in wonder. He was looking outside with wide eyes.
HeeChul wondered why and followed the other's gaze. From where they were, they could see the entrance. The gate was open and people were running in. HeeChul and the man next to him took a step closer toward the windows.
"Police?" the man murmured in surprise.
HeeChul raised his eyebrows in shock. Police? Did that mean that they were going to be saved? Three policemen were talking with one of the man, dressed in black, and many more ran around in every direction.
HeeChul's heart pounded in hope. He took a quick look at the man and realized that he was too distracted to pay attention to HeeChul, so the student broke free and started to run.
The man turned his head around after HeeChul. He needed a few seconds, before he started to chase him.
HeeChul had found new courage. He was going to be free soon. So he ran as fast as he could.
HeeChul raced around the corner. After only a few minutes without meeting anyone, he found the exit and managed to get out of the building.
The policemen hadn't reached his building yet. They were investigating the school's building first.
HeeChul just needed to reach them now. Then, he was free. Just a few more meters. He knew, if he made it around the corner of the building, he was in sight of the policemen. He was safe there.
A smile spread across HeeChul's face. Not only was he going to be free, but he was also going to see SiWon again. He had missed him so much.
After what he had gone through and being saved soon, HeeChul had even found the courage to apologize.
He turned his head around to look after the man who had been chasing him. He wasn't there anymore.
HeeChul was relieved and he stopped running. He turned around completely to observe the building he had been tortured in for the whole time.
HeeChul was just thinking how happy his life was going to be from now on when he saw a figure in front of a window, far above.
The student was shocked. His eyes widened. There, on the top floor, was SiWon.
He looked sadly outside of the window, but he didn't seem to see HeeChul. Or he had chosen to ignore him.
HeeChul's breath hitched as he bit his lower lip and ran back into the building. He knew where that room had to be, so he would be able to find it quickly. Hopefully, he wouldn't meet someone else on his way.
HeeChul sprinted along the hallway and upstairs. No one was there. The corridors were empty.
After six minutes, HeeChul arrived at the room. He pushed the door open. He actually had expected it to be locked, but it wasn't.
He entered the room. But it was empty.
"SiWon?" HeeChul called out, but he didn't receive an answer. Nothing. No one was here.
HeeChul turned around. There was only this one door with one corridor to the floor beneath. SiWon had obviously escaped, but why hadn't HeeChul seen him?
HeeChul looked around in confusion and slowly went back down.
Shouts were heard. Steps followed.
HeeChul guessed the policemen were investigating this building now.
The student sighed. He took three more steps when suddenly, someone told him to stay still.
HeeChul immediately obeyed in fear and looked up. A policeman approached him and after seeing that HeeChul was only a student, the younger one was allowed to move. "Another student. I'll take him down," the policeman told a few others who had come with him, and so, HeeChul was just dragged away.
"What's your name?" HeeChul was asked, but the student didn't answer, although the other one's voice sounded kind and friendly. But HeeChul suddenly felt empty. Emotionless. It was too tiring to answer.
"Hey, why don't you answer?" the policeman asked carefully.
HeeChul shook his head. "Where are you taking me?" he finally asked.
The policeman smiled, clearly relieved that the student was able to speak. "To the front of the school building. All the students are gathering there," he explained.
HeeChul's eyes lit up with hope. Another policeman had probably taken SiWon down before HeeChul had been able to meet him here.
"So every student is there?" HeeChul asked and the other man nodded.
HeeChul smiled in anticipation and the man seemed to be happy for he was relieved that HeeChul was quite normal for a student who had been in the lab and probably tortured.
They left the building and went outside where many students were standing and talking, some in fear, but most of them were smiling in relief and hope.
HeeChul smiled in anticipation as he approached the big group with the policeman who directly went to another one to talk and tell him about HeeChul.
All the while, HeeChul was lifting his head as high as possible to look over all the students and to find SiWon.
He gave the policeman who had taked care of him a brief look. "Can I go around? I want to look for someone," he announced.
The policeman nodded. "But if you want, most of these students probably are already listed here. You can ask her," he told HeeChul and pointed to a policewoman.
HeeChul just ran toward her and asked for SiWon without even greeting her. She didn't seem to care and looked quickly through the names, but eventually, as she looked up again to meet HeeChul's eyes, she shook her head. "I'm sorry. Your friend isn't listed yet, but maybe, you just look for him. Not every student's name is written down yet."
HeeChul sighed in disappointment, bowed briefly and then left to do what she had suggested for him to do.
But HeeChul couldn't find him. Instead, he bumped into someone else. He was surprised at the sight in front of him and at the sudden hug he received.
HeeChul patted the other's back slowly, before they let go of each other. "HeeChul, I'm so happy to see you here, safe," DongHae exclaimed with a bright smile.
HeeChul just nodded. He didn't show much emotion. Of course, he was happy, but how could he be really happy if SiWon wasn't there with him?
"Are you fine?" DongHae asked in concern and HeeChul nodded, not saying a word.
"Where is SiWon?" DongHae eventually asked after a long pause.
HeeChul hesitantly looked away to the ground. "I don't know. He should be here somewhere. So you haven't seen him either?"
DongHae eyed HeeChul with even more worry as he shook his head no.
