Medium: Real Life
Fandom: Business
Subject: Wal-Mart/Consumers
Title: Makin' Money
Notes: I’m not entirely sure why I felt the need to make this, but once I got the idea, several songs immediately reared their heads and demanded to be included. So, without further ado:

This mix was made to commemorate the love/hate relationship between those two staples of modern society: Wal-Mart and the common consumer.

It’s a vicious, cyclic, abusive relationship: consumers demand lower prices, so Wal-Mart moves its factories overseas to cut costs. The profit gained allows the corporation to open another hundred stores. Factories all across the U.S. shut down, leaving millions without jobs. Demand for lower costs rises as households lose their main income. Wal-Mart outsources even more jobs, and opens up another hundred stores. More factory workers lose their jobs, and demand for lower prices rises.

And so on.

The consumer keeps coming back, knowing that this time, Wal-Mart will be nicer, won’t hit them when they complain, won’t be mean. This time.

Shoehorn With Teeth - They Might Be Giants

He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
People should get beat up for stating their beliefs
He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
Cause he knows there's no such thing

One By One - Chumbawamba

Leader of the union
All of our questions he ignored
He washed his hands and he
dreamt of his reward

If any ask us why we died
We tell them that our
leader lied
Sold us out down the riverside
Whose side are you on?

Money - Vitamin C

Say what you will because you know it's true
No hundred dollar bill, no fun for you
Dream of your life as your days go by
Trapped in a job 'til the day you die
Those with the dollar are those with the power
Getting more clearer every minute and hour
Keep on your path hanging on by a thread
With anyone's luck you might get ahead

Ikea - Jonathon Coulton (I know it isn’t about Wal-Mart, but go with with me on this one)

I-ke-a (Ikea-a) just some oak and some pine and a handful of Norsemen
I-ke-a (Ikea-a) selling furniture for college kids and divorced men
Everyone has a home
But if you don’t have a home, you can buy one there!

Eat the Rich - Aerosmith

Eat The Rich
There's only one thing that they’re good for
Eat The Rich
Take one bite now - come back for more
Eat The Rich
I gotta get this off my chest
Eat The Rich
Take one bite now - spit out the rest

Kiss Me, Son of God - They Might Be Giants

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage
Called the blood of the exploited working class
But they've overcome their shyness
Now they're calling me Your Highness
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

Now I laugh and make a fortune
Off the same ones that I tortured
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

I Feel Fantastic - Jonathon Coulton

All I know is driving on drugs feels better when they're prescription
All I know is the world looks beautiful, the world looks so damn beautiful

All I know is work is easy when you don't stress out about deadlines
All I know is I take my medicine I always take my medicine

Big Yellow Taxi - Counting Crows

They took all the trees, and put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people a dollar and a half to see them
No, no, no, don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone
They paved paradise, and put up a parkin' lot

What You Own - RENT

And when you’re living in America
At the end of the millenium
You’re what you own

If I Had $1,000,000 - Barenaked Ladies

If I had $1000000, we wouldn’t have to walk to the store
If I had $1000000, we’d take a limousine cause it costs more
If I had $1000000, we wouldn’t have to eat Kraft dinner.
(but we would!)

If I had $1000000, if I had $1000000
If I had $1000000, if I had $1000000
Id be rich.

Stuck in the 90’s - Moxy Fruvous

He wakes up to "Homeless are stupid, welfare is stupid
Private investment, efficiency, cool fiscal planning”
Sounds like more Pat Buchanan
Back in his day job this afternoon
Unlikely he'll move down to Cuba soon
Reluctant to find he's stuck in the '90s again

White lies, rich guys hoarding a big prize
We've got work to do
Reluctant to find he's stuck in the '90s again

Political Science - Randy Newman

Boom goes London and boom Paris
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono
And there'll be Italian shoes for me

Commissioning a Symphony in C - Cake

With money you squeeze from the peasants
To your nephew you can give it as a present
This magnificent symphony in c
You’ll be commissioning a symphony in C

The Day John Henry Died - Drive-By Truckers

It didn't matter if he won, if he lived, or if he'd run.
They changed the way his job was done. Labor costs were high.
That new machine was cheap as hell and only John would work as well,
so they left him laying where he fell the day John Henry died.

Eventually, everyone ends up working for Wal-Mart as low-level labor monkeys, in order to buy all the things they need from Wal-Mart. The relationship grinds on into oblivion.
