This Post Is About Food

A nice dinner tonight that we cooked together: on the grill, marinated pork chops for Mike, and portobello mushrooms for us both. A nice, fresh coleslaw, and salad made from a lettuce I grew from seed, with tomato and celery.

I might need to construct a Lettuce Washing Station out beside the garden, though, because it's simply impossible to shake all the bugs out of a head of lettuce before actually tearing the leaves off one by one. Therefore, I was joined at the kitchen sink by - at the very least - various gnat-like things, two earwigs that took off in different directions, and a pill bug. The pill bug was found squirming on its back on the counter with its little legs waving in the air like an overturned turtle, but a rescue was effected by offering the edge of a bit of paper towel, to which it was able to cling while being carried back outside.

Last week, we also did a bit of experimenting in carbohydrate reduction by trying to fake mashed potatoes with a head of steamed cauliflower and a cup of Greek yoghurt. It was weird. No, really w.e.i.r.d. Mike said he could see how it kind of does mimic mashed potatoes, but it just needs a little something. I was sceptical, but I looked online, and most of the recipes seemed to include a bit of Parmesan cheese. I have a bit of the results of the experiment left over, so tomorrow I'm going to reheat them with the Parm and see how that tastes.

And finally, something's happened to the local fruit. I've had strawberries and blueberries from my own yard, and strawberries from the farm we buy from, and they're beautiful and juicy -- and they have very little flavor. I think it's the weather. Too much clouds and rain; not enough sun. I hope we get more sun before the tomatoes start to ripen!
