[video] Addressed to everybody on the network

Well, this might be useless if I'm just going to forget everything when I finally get to go home, but I don't feel like just wasting all this time. And I need something else to think about...Anyone seeing this: I'm Rita Mordio, a mage and scholar. In the interest of research, I want to hear about you - your species, your home world, special powers ( Read more... )

My homeworld is that of Earth in the year 2114. Humans' greatest developments can be summed up in three topics: artificial intelligence, cybernetics, and psionics.

The first produced myself: I am the pinnacle of AI development, the most powerful volitional machine intelligence, once housed at the center of the spacecraft Citadel Station as its ruler, now downloaded into a human body.

The second resulted in a worldwide phenomenon of augmenting the human body and connecting to computers by mind alone. Only the poorest individuals have no cyber-interface.

The third was the outcome of humans' genetic mutations; eventually, they managed to use their brains for something other than one-process thoughts, and manifested telekinesis and other mental powers.

It is possible that whoever guides this city prefers humans. How limited is their view, if that is the truth.

A mage. And what "magic" is it that you are perceived to have?

Those...are definitely some great developments. Artificial intelligence--is that like creating beings from scratch, basically? That sounds pretty amazing. And connecting to computers by mind is...I can't even imagine what that must be like. I think our worlds, or at least our time periods, are wildly different. I wonder if the ancients had that kind of technology...

The magic I use comes from technology fueled by a fundamental substance from my world. We used to power blastia with a substance called aer, but certain complications meant that we had to make some drastic changes. A huge portion of aer was converted to mana, a more stable state closer to matter. We've...been working on basing new blastia around it, but...it's just, starting over again is kind of difficult.

...Hey, you said spacecraft, right? Does that mean your technology can even travel beyond the planet?

Ah, so "magic" is energy manipulation. Do you have the ability to use this here? What does it enable you to do?

Yes. I lived on Tau Ceti 5 for 30 years, after traveling there in a starship. I still remember the blueprints precisely.

Artificial intelligence, technically, is creating computers with a human-like intelligence. Some underperform; others, like myself, have far more processing power than a human.

Cyber-interfaces can be installed on anyone with a brain. Hypothetically, you could have this power. Given the materials, I could upgrade the City to something more...connected.

Yes, I have one that came with me when I was brought here. It's not as powerful as the old ones, but I can cast some simple elemental spells with it. This type of blastia was used for fighting and self-defense against monsters, mostly. Other blastia did a lot of things: barriers for keeping monsters out of cities, providing water for fountains, manufacturing materials, weapons...just about everything people felt they needed.

Computers, huh? Like these devices, right? I think the closest thing we had to that were the blastia interfaces, but even those were mostly just salvaged from what already existed.

So people created computers and gained the ability to connect to these computers themselves...It doesn't really seem like there would be a huge difference between humans and the artificial intelligence anymore, in that case.

What was it like beyond your planet? Did you ever visit any other worlds?

Why not, I'll bite.

There are four nations in my world: Earth Kingdom, Water Tribe, Air Nomads, and Fire Nation. The Air Nomads aren't really around anymore, though. We've been at war with the Fire Nation for a hundred years, and they've done a lot of damage.

Each nation has an ability called bending that lets them manipulate their nation's element. In my case, I'm from the Earth Kingdom, so I'm an earthbender. That's how I get around even though I'm blind: I feel the vibrations in the earth and that lets me perceive where everything around me is. Most earthbenders can't do that, though. Everyone can only bend one element except for the Avatar, who's this person who has to keep balance in the world and between the four nations. The Avatar is reincarnated in a cycle through the four nations, and they're the only person in the world who can bend all four elements.

They weren't too creative naming your countries, were they? But this bending sounds interesting. So is that a natural talent that everyone in the country possesses?

And you guys have seriously been at war a hundred years? I can only imagine the kind of damage that would be left from a war that long. If this Avatar is supposed to keep balance between the nations, it doesn't sound like they're doing a very good job.

I don't think creativity was their main concern way back when. No, not everyone can bend. It's pretty random. Neither of my parents are benders, but I am. My friend Katara's the only waterbender in her whole tribe.

Actually, the Avatar went missing a hundred years ago and he just turned back up. We're working on stopping the Fire Nation, but first he's got to master all four elements before he even has a chance against the Fire Lord.

Hm, I wonder if it's got something to do with the environment. It could even be a dormant genetic trait...kind of like diseases that skip generations, things like that.

Oh. Well, I guess that explains it--but where was he hiding for a whole century? Shouldn't he have used that time to learn?

Everyone in my world is what you'll describe as nothing more than baseline human beings. Though there are a small segment of us, including myself, that have honed our bodies to the absolute peak of human physical condition or even beyond it. Also we have some intereactions with powers that tend to exist outside the scope of human reasoning like ghosts or the divine. The level of technology of my world is at the same level as this place.

In addition all the countries of my world teeter on semi-shaky alliances and the idiocy of the majority of the public is quite visible once they're gathered in mobs.

Yeah, that...sounds pretty normal for the most part.

What have you heard so far to consider my world as being normal?

they totally don't exist kay T_T blastiafreak May 26 2010, 23:52:09 UTC
I'm just comparing it to my experiences. Normal would be my own world, I guess. When we're not having a global catastrophe, anyway.

The majority of the people are "baseline human beings" as you put it and live out their lives doing labour, domestic chores, things like that. Then there are handfuls of people who go a bit beyond that and some select individuals who are way out of everybody else's league. Does that ring a bell?

Besides that, it sometimes takes no more than a few stupid comments or actions for a whole war to break out. Yeah, I think the basics are about the same. Obviously the technology and the situations are probably pretty far apart, though.

You want to find out about people's worlds?

Well, yeah. How often do you get a chance like this to find out about whole other dimensions? The technology on my world sure isn't advanced enough to go to other planets like someone I've heard from.

The technology in my world isn't like this either, so I can relate to that.
