CHAPTER 2

“A Yuri Situation”

Date: Jan 23rd

Young Bae walks out of his date feeling kind of, well, strange. He had mostly gone on this blind date just to get Hyun Suk hyung off his back, a big ‘Hey, look I’m not depressed anymore. I’m singing and dancing and even dating, don’t worry about me’ kind of thing. At first he was really nervous, who was this girl?, but he was sure that Hyun Suk hyung and Jae hyung wouldn’t set him up with anyone who wasn’t nice.

He had arrived early, just so he would have a moment to himself before she came. When the girl turned out to be Shoshi’s Yuri his mouth had literally dropped. At first it was a little awkward -God I was such a fail, thought Young Bae -but by the end of dinner they were talking and laughing together. Yuri was a really nice girl and made him feel instantly comfortable. And she was really pretty too and sexy and any guy would die to be in his position. So why did he leave feeling so unsatisfied? It was Kwon Freaking Yuri -arguably the sexiest girl out of all of SNSD.

Is there something wrong with me? Young Bae couldn’t help but wonder. He and Yuri had even exchanged numbers and promised to follow up with each other. In fact she seemed like she had a good time and was interested in seeing him again, so why did he feel like he was letting something go instead of reaching for something new?

To be honest, he kind of knew why. Or rather who?

But this year was a new beginning -he was suppose to be letting go and moving on, she said so herself.

Buzzz-buzzz-buzzz

Young Bae looks down at his phone. It flashes “DARA” and under it is the message;

How did it go?

How did what go?, Young Bae wonders, he didn’t tell Dara about the date. In fact he didn’t tell anyone about the date, not Jiyong, not Teddy, not anyone; just in case it turned out to be a complete fail.

How did what go? He responds,

Your Date. Stop being stupid and ell me how it went.

Who told you I went on a date?

I got my sources, now spill. Date. How did it go. Now.

It was O.K.

Just O.K.?

IDK. Maybe?

God, you suck at texting. How are we friends again? Calling you.

R-r-r-ring, R-r-r-ring , R-r-r-ring

Young Bae looks at his phone -it’s Dara, obviously. He debates about it for a few seconds and then picks up.

“So, how did it go?” was the first thing out her mouth. “Tell me, tell me, tell me. I’m so curious. Who was she? Did it go well? Is she pretty? Do you think she’s pretty? What’s her name? Do you thi-“

He cuts her off.

“Dara, seriously calm down. You’re more excited about this than I am. But to answer your questions, it went well. Or at least I think it went well, she was smiling and laughing at my jokes…no, they weren’t dumb… But maybe she was smiling because she was uncomfortable…I don’t know, maybe… now you got me stressing.”

Now that he was being questioned about the date, Young Bae was a lot more worried about it. Ever since that day Dara visited him at Teddy’s house and held him while he cried, they’ve become infinitely closer. Dara had always been one of his best friends, but now, now she was sometimes the only thing holding him together.

That snow day hadn’t turned out to be a one-time only incident -which he had feared -but something she kept at. She was there for him like no one has been in forever. After he had cried for an embarrassingly long time -he still blushes whenever he thinks about it but it was with Dara so it was ok -they had laid there and talked about stuff. Not just his problems and what he had been dealing with but also about her, what her issues where. They traded childhood stories and secrets, he told her about his family problems and she told him about hers. Under the covers, they spent hours telling each other things they never told anyone before while the snow fell around them.

When they had emptied out their personal closets, they had laid there for a while and then fallen asleep. It wasn’t till Teddy came in and woke them up to drive Dara back home that they had gotten out of their own little world. And they kept it up -especially Dara -with daily texts and even phone calls (they were both awkward on the phone but they kept getting better). Dara was even the first he told he was changing his album, even before Teddy. It was right after he finished writing Take It Slow.

“AHHHHH, she gave you her number!!!” Young Bae snaps back to reality as Dara practically shrills in his ears.

“Omg, this is so cute!!! What’s her name? Do I know her?!? Omg, Bae have to tell me!! Are you going to call her, omg!!” Dara sounds 10 times more excited about this date than him -Young Bae doesn’t know how he feels about that. Maybe this was a good thing, another sign that he should stop holding on to his feelings.

“I guess you know her. It was Kwon Yuri, from Soshi,” he tells her, waiting for her ear splitting shrills and congrats. Instead he hears nothing, silence. He calls out her name -was there something she knew about Yuri.

“Oh, sorry Bae. Umm, Yuri. Wow. That’s really great. She’s really pretty and yeah, wow!!” Dara didn’t sound half as excited as she did five seconds before. What the hell?, Young Bae thought.

“Do you know something about her? Is she really mean or something?”

“What no, no. I’ve only interacted with her on stage but she seems nice. You have to ask Minzy more about her, she knows some of the Soshi members.” She still didn’t sound as happy for him as before.

“Then why the sudden decrease in excitement ? You can tell me if she said anything to you, like seriously, you come first,” says Young Bae.

“No, seriously I don’t know much about her and she’s been nice the few times we’ve interacted. I’m just surprised, that’s all. I mean is Yuri - I was expecting someone a little less, I don’t know….famous.”

“What, like who?”

“You know what, I don’t know. I’m sorry I have to go, Minzy is calling me. Talk to you later. Bye.”
And with that she hangs up and leaves Young Bae staring at his phone. What the hell was up with that, Young Bae wonders.

---
Dara hangs up her phone. So Bae went on a date with Yuri, she thinks. To be honest, she doesn’t like it. When she first found out (ok eavesdrop but whatever) that Mr. Yang and Jae had set up Bae with a blind date she was a little worried. While Bae was doing a lot better and was a lot happier -and the credit goes to her of course -she didn’t think he was in the position to be dating. But maybe a nice simple girl would do him some good, so she reserved judgment.

But Yuri?!?! Soshi’s Yuri!?!?!

She was completely the wrong girl for Bae. Not that she had anything against Yuri, she was a nice girl Dara was sure, but completely wrong for Bae. First of all, she was too young for him. Bae needed someone older, who could lead him a little. Plus he didn’t much like aegyo but liked girls who were casual and real with him. Second, Yuri looked like a girl who could be a bit much -too sexy, too crazy and a bit too forceful for Bae. He’s the type to back off if a girl comes off to strong; he needed someone who he could stay home with and just sit quietly. Someone comfortable. Bae was like a new little flower -he needed sun, water and dirt but give him too much of any of those and he’ll be crushed. O.K. so maybe that analogy was dumb but Yuri was still too much. And third, Bae needed someone who was there for him. Even if Yuri wasn’t too young (which she is) or too much (which she is), she was also super busy. Bae needed support right now and how much support could she give him running around everywhere with her group and whatever. Dara had expected Jae and Mr. Yang to set him up with a nice girl from the church or one of the Crazy girls or even a family friend, but they instead hook him up with Yuri?!?

She really wishes someone had consulted her about this before forcing him out on this date. And also, she didn’t appreciate the fact he didn’t tell her about it. She had to ease drop on Teddy and Kush’s conversation to even find this out. Teddy wasn’t happy about the date either -felt they were pushing him too soon.

And she agreed, Bae had just come out of his depression and was completely re-working his album, he couldn’t get caught up in dating. Not that she didn’t think he should date, cause he should, but he should take things slow.

Buzzz-buzzz-buzzz

She looks at her phone - Bae had sent her a text.

Are you mad at me?

Dara felt bad, she didn’t mean to make him think she was mad at him. As much as she didn’t think he and Yuri were good together, she should have been more supportive.

No. Why would I be mad?

Because of Yuri. I’m sorry, I won’t call her if you don’t want me to.

Aww, now she felt even worse. Bae was at least trying to get out of his shell and move out into the dating world and she was holding him back. What kind of friend am I? Dara asks herself.

No please, don’t be mean to her because of me. I was just surprise. You should call her.

Really? Cause I don’t want you mad at me. I promise it wasn’t anything serious, just a date.

No really, stop. I’m not mad and I don’t hate Yuri. You should call her. If nothing else she would be a great friend. You said you wanted to make more friends this year, right?

I guess. If you think I should call her then I’ll call her. Thanks.

You’re welcome. And we need to talk later, I want to know more about your date.

You should just come over. Lunch tomorrow? I’ll cook.

Ramen? Kekeke, sure, can’t wait. Excited. Bbyong!!

Are you going to the Junsu Oppa’s wedding on Monday?

Not sure, none of the guys are going.

What! You have to come, Come with me and the girls, it’ll be fun. ^_^

I don’t know. I don’t have anything to wear.

What!?! Just wear one of your many suits from Wedding Dress promos. Do you not want to come with me?

Well, I would like a hotter date but I guess you’ll do. Ke ke ke, jk.

Jerk. Like you could do better, You’ll have me, Bom and baby Minki on your arm. Better be thankful.

I’ll be pimping. Kekeke. It’ll be my pleasure to go with you guys. Anyway, concert practice now. Have to go. Miss you.

Lol, you saw me yesterday and you’ll see me tomorrow. Miss you too, you big jerk.

Dara puts her phone away. It’s been only a couple of weeks since the 14th and she and Bae have been getting a lot closer. She always thought that she knew everything there was to know about him but the last few weeks just showed her how little she actually knew.

But I’m learning, Dara thought. I’m learning a lot more.
