Chapter 1
Saving Young Bae
Date: Jan 14th
Little white tear drops from the sky, that’s what the first snow of the year, looked like. Puffs of frozen ice cascading down the gray Seoul city sky.
Dara looks out of her bedroom window in 2NE1’s new apartment, gazing at the snow filled streets and feeling hopeful. This year should be a good year, she feels. 2009 was an amazing year for her and hopefully 2010 will be great as well. 2NE1 had an amazingly successful debut, beyond even her wildest imaginations; she was well loved in her homeland. Dog Poop’s group was doing well too and her friend Ji Yong had a successful year with his album too, and was doing well despite the controversies. Not to mention Dong Wook had come back from America and not only was she happy about this but her friend Hyun Bul was also ecstatic. There was only one thing bothering her, and that was what was going on with her friend Young Bae.
She and Bae have been friends since 2004; in fact he was one of the first friends she made when she first moved back to South Korea. And even though there is a bit of an age difference, 5 year in fact, he is such a mature person and she such an immature one that they get along amazing well. Plus he is one of the few people who understand what it was like to grow up through hard times. But now, well now she feels like she barely knows him. What had started out as work related stress in July has turned into a depression of epic portion by November. The only time she’s seen YB really smile in the last 6 months have been in pictures, in fact she’s barely seen YB at all in the last 2 months outside of work. From her understanding, if he didn’t have something on his schedule then he stayed cooped up in his room in Teddy’s house -sometimes working on music, mostly just hiding from the world.
Watching the snow fall and seeing how beautiful it was, like diamonds shining in the sky, she felt her heart fill up with determination. She, Sandara Park, had to do something. She had to save Young Bae, save him from himself.
---
To call or not to call, that is the question.
An hour after she made the decision to help Bae, Dara stood pacing in her room clutching her cell phone. Her fingers were poised over the key pad and everything she wanted to say was at the tip of her tongue. She hated calling people though, because she hated the awkward silence that it brings. But she knew she couldn’t save Bae through texting. First of all, he probably wasn’t going to reply and if he did he’ll probably say he’s fine -this isn’t the first time she’s tried to reach out. And second, she couldn’t convey the beauty of life and the happiness she felt watching the first snow fall through text, no matter how pretty she worded it. No, she needed to make a call.
And so she gathers her courage and dials his number.
R-r-r-ring, R-r-r-ring , R-r-r-ring
Trust Bae to not have a ring tone, Dara thinks.
The phone rings a few more times and no one picks up and it goes to voicemail.
“Hello, you’ve reached Young-“
Dara hang up before the message finishes. She’ll try again.
R-r-r-ring, R-r-r-ring , R-r-r-ring
“Hello,” a deep sleepy voice calls out.
“Bae, it’s Dara”
Silence. Dara waits for a reply, getting a little more discouraged as the seconds tick by and he doesn’t respond.
“Umm, Bae. Hi, it’s Dara.” She tries one more time, just in case he didn’t hear her.
“I know,” he says. And another five seconds passes and then, with a sigh, he asks her how she’s doing. To be honest, she’s a little shocked. In the 5 years she’s known Bae he has never responded to her like that. In fact he’s usually very happy to get a call from her since it’s so rare that she actually calls people. Actually, Bae was nice and polite to everyone. Was he really that bad off?
“I’m ok. How are you?” She tries to get the conversation moving but it’s already turning awkward and it’s only been 2 minutes. Agioo, what is she going to do? She was supposed to be reaching out to Bae and now she’s made it awkward.
“Fine. I’m fine.” The answer was short and clipped. “Are we done? Cause I was sleeping and I’ll like to get back to it.”
Dara feels tears in her eyes, Bae has never been that mean to her before. Was he like this the last time they talked, she tries to remember. She realizes that she hasn’t really talked to Bae in like a month, a full month of exchanging nothing more than casual ‘how-do-you-dos’ around the YG building with someone she claims to be best friends with. She felt so guilty, had anyone been looking out for Bae in the past few months? The only one she could think of was Teddy. Thank god for Teddy. Silence reigns on the phone as Bae calls out her name. She keeps silent on the phone and then turns her head and looks outside. The snow was still falling and a snow covered Seoul was inspirational.
“Have you seen outside, Bae? It’s snowing, the first snow of the year.” She says excitedly.
“What…? No. No, I have not.” Bae’s voice comes out hard and annoyed. “Is this why you called me, Dara? To tell me about some stupid snow? Look, I’m not feeling well and I have a whole bunch of sh-t to deal with and I feel -. Forget it, I got to go. Bye.”
And with that he hangs up. Dara is shocked. Bae hung up on her; he’s never ever hung up on her before. And the rant he went on at the end scares her, the way he just cut off in the middle of his sentence.
Dara stares at the phone in her hand, debating what to do. She could forget about it, go on with her day and hang with the girls. Already, she could hear Minji cooking in the kitchen and Bommie and Charin laughing in the living room. She already spent the morning with them, even took pictures of the snow outside their window. It would be no trouble at all to just go back and hang out with the girls, leave Bae to his own problems. And then she looks on her desk and at the picture of them together 2 years ago, backstage at his HOT concert. He has his arm around her shoulders and they’re smiling at the camera together. The smile on his face was so clear and happy, so open that it brought tears to her eyes. Where was that smile now? When was the last time she’s seen it -beautiful and open and not a hint of pain? Was it in November, September, maybe July?
No, she couldn’t give up. She couldn’t just forget about it. Bae needed her, it’s been 6 months and he was just getting worse. When was the last time he left Teddy’s house, the last time he went out with his friends, was he even eating properly? She didn’t know, she didn’t anything about how he’s been. She’s been busy but that’s no excuse. She knew that he would have been there for her, had been there for her before. Was she really his friend if she abandons him that easily?
She looks into the mirror and gives herself a little nod. Yes. She’s going to save Young Bae, whether he liked it or not.
---
Dara huddles in her coat trying to make heads or tails of the road and the sidewalk -it wasn’t snowing this heavily when she left the dorm 20 minutes ago. Teddy only lived two blocks from the YGE building, which was 3 blocks from her apartment. What was usually a 15 minute walk will probably take her 30, she should have driven.
The girls had looked at her like she was insane when she ran out the house yelling that she was going to go save Young Bae. In fact, they’ve sent her about 5 texts telling her to come back and to try to save Young Bae tomorrow, when it stops snowing. She told them that she made up her mind and if she didn’t do it today she would never forgive herself, especially if Bae’s depression spirals out of control; better yet, even more out of control. She was going to help her friend, why didn’t they understand? At least they didn’t follow through on their plan to call Teddy and Mr. Yang.
She sees Teddy’s condo up ahead and runs as fast as the snow would let her towards it. Once she shows the security guard her face, he lets her through. As she makes her way up to Teddy’s condo, she starts having second thoughts. Was it really wise to barge into Teddy’s house and harass Bae into being happy? Was that really her plan? Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Too late now, Sandara. She says to herself. You’re already wet and cold, better make it worth it.
She knocks and a very surprised Teddy Oppa lets her in.
“Dara!” Teddy is wearing a t-shirt and pajama pants and no hat or hood. This is the most normal and plain he’s ever looks and she finds it odd.
“What..what are you doing here? Did Young Bae invite you?” He’s very shocked to see her but quickly invites her in, especially once he sees the state of her clothing.
“No, but he’s why I came. I really need to talk to him.” She’s shaking and her teeth are clattering and Teddy’s looking at her with concern. Before Dara can go on with her whole “I got to save Young Bae” spiel, he quickly announces that they had to get her out of her clothes and into something dry. It was a little awkward when he announced that.
Thankfully, Teddy’s girlfriend had left some clothes at his place and while they didn’t exactly fit Dara-damn my small body, she thought -they weren’t falling off either.
When she finally got changed they sit down and Teddy asks her why she had come. She tells him how the first snow of the year inspired her, reminded her that 2010 was a new beginning and that urged her to help Young Bae. He has to start the year right. At first Dara was a little hesitant that Teddy would laugh -like seriously, the mission of saving Young Bae did sound a little crazy. But he didn’t and instead gave Dara a little warning.
“To be honest, Dara I’ve been trying to ‘save’ Young Bae for months now. Everyone has gotten worried about him -GD and TOP have come by here, even Seungri has come by to cheer him up. Hung Suk Hyung has also come by to talk to Young Bae and nothing has worked. In fact, he just seems to close in on himself more.” Teddy looks close to tears as he talks and for the first time Dara realizes how much Bae meant to him.
“We’re thinking of making him go see a doctor but he’s refusing and I understand, doesn’t want his business getting out. We got him to go once and they gave him some medication but it isn’t working, I think it made him even worse. Either that or he’s not taking them. We’re supposed to be working on music but he doesn’t seem to care, not motivated at all. I seriously don’t know what to do.”
Teddy looks at her and Dara wishes she could give him some answers. She doesn’t know what to do either and the fact that so many have tried and failed was really discouraging. Maybe I can’t save Young Bae after all, she thinks. I’m not sure what I was thinking, coming here as if I had some miracle cure.
“You can’t help him in overcoming his demons in one day, Dara. I know you and Bae are friends but if you want to help him, really help him, then this can’t be a spur of the moment thing. You have to mean it, you have to be there for him even when he’s not being himself.” Teddy gives her a hard stare. “Otherwise, you can go home and let him be.”
“No, I came here to help Bae,” Dara says. “And that’s what I’m going to do.”
---
She quietly walks up the stairs into Young Bae’s room. It’s really Teddy’s guest bedroom but since Bae’s been staying here for weeks, months really, it’s pretty much his. She knocks softly on his door, the window at the end of the hallway shows that it was still snowing, even harder than before. The heaviness of the snow creating shadows on the floor, she stares transfix for a bit. She’s knocks again, a little louder.
“Come in, Teddy.”
She doesn’t correct him but walks in. The room is cold and dark, the shades are drawn shut and it smells like unwashed boy in the room. It’s pretty much a cave, a cave built to hide a man at war with the world, at war with himself, she thinks.
She goes quickly to the window and draws up the blinds and a gray light floods the room.
“Teddy, seriously man. What the hell?” Bae groans from the queen sized bed that dominates the room. He’s hidden under the covers with his head completely covered. On the table next to him are some pill bottles, she spots an Aspirin bottle but the other 3 look like prescription medication. The fact that he’s taking pills makes her heart cry.
“I’m not Teddy,” she says softly. Bae goes still on the bed. He pokes his head out and looks at her.
“Dara?” He seems surprised. “What …how..huh?”
“You sounded really sad on the phone and I came to cheer you up.” Dara fakes a smile as she walks over to the bed and sits down beside him. Bae scoots away. Dara doesn’t want to admit that that hurt, but it did.
“Why, why are you here? You should leave,” Young Bae sighs and drops his head on his pillow. “I don’t want you to see me like this.”
“Like what?!?” she yells, suddenly frustrated. Both of them are surprised and Bae even jumps a little. Dara calms down and starts again. She lay down on the bed, over the covers.
“I realized today that we’ve barely talked lately. I know you’ve been sad Bae, that you’ve been unhappy and I haven’t been there for you. No wait, don’t cut me off,” she stops him when Bae tries to respond.
“I should have been there for you like you were there for me; you never gave up on me even when all of YG had almost given me up as untalented. You were the one to encourage me to continue singing even when I was convinced it would go nowhere. You were there for me when I broke up with Joseph and thought I would never love again, and comforted me when that strange fling with Seung Bul ended.” They both laugh a little at that; that was strange time in her life.
Dara turns on her side and faces Bae. He is completely wrapped from head to toe in his covers with only his head poking out. He’s warm dark eyes looks bruised, the dark circles deep, and his expression looks pained though he was relaxed, almost as if his face had frozen that way after months of being held like that. His Mohawk looks overgrown, as if he hadn’t bothered to get it trimmed in a while. And to be honest, he kind of smelled. But Dara doesn’t care, this is the face of one of her most treasured friends.
“And the point is Bae is that you’ve been there for me, and the first time you needed me, I wasn’t there for you.” She reaches out and touches his face, smooth her hand gently down his cheeks and give him a warm smile through the tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry.”
And with that, it was like a river just broke. Bae spring into action, grabs her and pulls her close. He buries his face into her shoulder and weeps. And just like that, Dara finds herself lying under the covers, clutching her half-naked best friend (she quickly learned that he was only in his boxers) as he cries in her arms, making her the secret keeper to all his dreams and nightmares, his phobias and questions, his lows and his inspirations. And around them, the first snow of 2010 awash Seoul in white.
