Anything will be capable of word processing, so I'd get one for price. Dell's a really good company, actually, with high-quality parts. Most manufacturers have usable parts, but Dell's last longest (if you take care of them). The trouble is places like Best Buy load all sorts of startup and recovery crap onto them that bogs them down and causes problems, same with HP and other manufacturers. If you do buy a comp from Best Buy, be sure to get the OS disc too, and do a fresh wipe before you use it. And be sure to run spyware remover and virus scans regularly, like any responsible computer owner should.

It's a _lovely_ weekend for lappy shopping, ain't it?

That one looks like it will probably be quite suitable for your needs. I'm getting* one with 4GB RAM, but I put mine through their paces rather more thoroughly than I imagine you will. My roommate had a Dell our first couple of years at school, and it was...unreliable, and their tech support was not helpful or especially friendly, but my father has been trying to convince me for a couple of years now that they are infinitely better these days. Apparently he's had the same Dell for his work laptop since they moved down here in '06, and it's still more than serviceable. I'm personally an HP girl, but that's a silly loyalty born of a love for a calculator they haven't made in years [is a huge nerd ( ... )

I love Dell Inspirons. I bought the one I'm using now back in 2007 as a gaming notebook, and it's still serving my needs (even most games) today. And I'm certainly a power-user ( ... )

Assuming I'm not too late, that's an older model processor--I'd personally recommend something in the i series. In that price range, I would go for..

Inspiron 15R

Hmm, I was hoping to post more links, but it seems i3s have gone UP in price since I looked -- that's not the way it's supposed to work! Given that, anything with a T4400 is good; you might also check the outlets and manufacturers themselves, as they often have better deals than bricks and mortar stores (excepting Costco).

The one thing I'd caution you on is the 64-bit operating system. Although this allows you to utilize all the ram (though why it has THREE GB and not 4 is completely beyond me -- almost not even worth it to have an odd number of GB), it won't be compatible with all devices or software. For instance, I can't use my scanner on my 64-bit computer.

If there are any programs or devices you know you MUST be able to use, check here to make sure you can.

And if you decide to go 64-bit.. get something with 4GB. Srsly. You can customize 'em on the Dell website.
