Went to the Hollywood Bowl last night to see Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, and Joshua Redman. To see the three of them headlining a show is pretty spectacular, so there was no excuse to not go. I brought a bunch of guys from work, plus Sarah's in town, and Meg came at the last second since I had a spare ticket.
The Hollywood Bowl is a neat place: they let you bring food and booze in, so we bought a bunch of deli crap from Whole Foods and three or four bottles of wine and some plastic wineglasses. Halfway through Christian McBride's set the full moon rose over the edge of the Bowl. Crickets chirped accompaniment. The stars were out above us. Kids smoked weed in the section next to us.
All three sets were excellent -- Redman stuck mostly to bop & pop jazz, McBride got some funk on (finishing by rocking out with Weather Report's "Boogie Woogie Waltz") and also reached out a bit for some bop, and Herbie is, well, Herbie. He's always been a little out there, and last night was no different. His violinist/vocalist, Lili Haydn, did some bizarre pop requiem for her mother. It was weird, but at least it was well-played. His bassist, Lionel Loueke, did a totally sweet African-influenced solo improv. And Hancock finished the night with a laid-back solo piece that somehow seguéd into an unexpected and awesome cover of US3's "Cantaloop".
I'm sold on the place. I just wish I wasn't so retarded that I missed seeing the Flaming Lips play there a few weeks ago.
