Read-a-thon post-mortem

Apr 11, 2010 11:15

Wooooooohoooooo!

I (mostly) completed my first read-a-thon ever!  I made 21 of the 24 hours...I finally fell asleep at 5 am.  I attribute my success in being awake that long partly to my housemate who handled the caffeine issue and some of the humor.  Witness my midnight cappuccino:

Pretty awesomely hilarious, no?
In 21 hours, I finished between 80 and 100 pages of Brideshead Revisited (finishing up the book), 35 or so pages of Orchids on Your Budget (again, finishing up the book), the whole of The Moneypenny Diaries:  Secret Servant, the whole of This Rough Magic, and the first 130 pages or so of The Moneypenny Diaries:  The Final Fling.

And now I've worked myself into a rather awkward position:  I *have* to finish Final Fling before I can face my work, but I *really* need to face my work, and I'm expecting a (rather LOOOOONG) phone call tonight at 10.  *dramatic sigh*  Oh, isn't my life hard?  ROFL
This is my end-of-day meme from Dewey's

1. Which hour was most daunting for you? Apparently 5 am since that's when i fell asleep

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? The Moneypenny Diaries are quite fun (though hard to get hold of in the States), and This Rough Magic is light, fast and entertaining.  People don't tend to read more Mary Stewart than the Merlin Trilogy, which is kind of a shame.

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Um, none for the program as a whole, but I've made a couple of notes on what I'll do personally next time

4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? I am really surprised, but having my housemate around was as much of a help as a hindrance.  She had planned on being gone this weekend, so I was a little dismayed when she announced that she was staying around.  Turns out she provided just enough distraction to keep me awake for most of the time, AND she was a good enabler with coffee and company

5. How many books did you read? I suppose the total adds up to three?  2 complete books and about 300 pages of others

6. What were the names of the books you read? Brideshead Revisited, The Moneypenny Diaries:  Secret Servant, The Moneypenny Diaries:  Final Fling, Orchids on Your Budget, This Rough Magic.

7. Which book did you enjoy most? All of them were fantastic

8. Which did you enjoy least? I really loved Brideshead, but I don't think I'd recommend it as a read-a-thon book.  It's too "dense" I suppose, if that makes sense.

9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? I was not a cheerleader, but I thoroughly enjoyed all their support!

10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?  Dependent on my teaching schedule and what I'm doing next term, I would LOVE to participate again.  I'll probably be a reader or a cheerleader.  I would host, but I don't think it would do much good since my LJ is friends locked 85% of the time :)
