Youmacon Pictures and thoughts

Nov 17, 2010 15:49

This was not the con I went to recently but one last year.
I forgot to put up photos and stuff for it.

So, here's a summary of what I did those two days I went:

I have this tendency not to pre-reg for cons because I fear that if something bad happens and I can't go, I'll lose out on the money I spent. Better to pay the $5-10 extra to register the day of, rather than risk losing $40-50.

The registration line was TWO HOURS LONG. The pre-reg line was about half that but still long. And mind you, this was at 1pm in the afternoon.

The convention was moved from where it used to be, in a large 15-story hotel in Dearborn, to downtown Detroit right on the river facing Canada, in the Renaissance Center. The RenCen is where GM's headquarters is located, as well as a Marriott hotel, revolving restaurant, mall, and is Detroit's tallest building (it's actually 7 towers, the hotel/restaurant is in the tallest). Even being in a bigger building with it's own mall and food court, I felt the con space was smaller.
I ended up only having to pay $3 a day parking in a lot two blocks away.

While there, I saw several people I knew. Some guys I know from the two local anime clubs, including the president of one of them, who was doing a panel on yaoi and yuri. I also bumped into some furs I knew. There was a furry panel Friday night where we just basically socialized.

While eating in the food court I watched the most interesting thing. Some lady was playing violin nearby. The guy next to me was cosplaying a character that plays a violin. He suddenly grabbed his violin and ran over to them and they had a duel. A duel he won by playing The Devil Went Down To Georgia.

I remember going to a lot of the panels that had adult themes, late at night on Friday and Saturday. Most of Saturday I watched AMV panels including AMV Wars. I watched the end of Cosplay Shougi, which is cosplayers playing Japanese chess. I watched half of the masquerade/costume contest. On Saturday night I played two rounds of Werewolf with a friend of mine from my school's anime club, as well as a fur friend from my school. I also remember going to part of "Who's Line is It" Saturday.

Sadly, I really wanted to watch AMV Hell 5 but the screening room was packed beyond fire code. It made me sad because AMV Hell is better to watch with people. They should have had it in a bigger room.

Other panels I went to included: Why Isn't Anime More Mainstream?, Top 10 AMVs, A Male's Take on Yaoi, Are You The Cancer Killing Your Fandom (done by a friend), Final Fantasy Fornication (bad CG porn), Yuri panel, "No! Stop! It feels good!" (another bad porn panel).

That's about all I can remember. I mean, it was a while ago, and half of cons is me wandering around socializing or taking pics.

NOW FOR THE PICTURES.

Here's the entire album, unsorted.

A picture of me being raped by furries at the furry panel. I'm in the middle, Gold Chimera is on the left, and Vio in all her cuteness is on the right. When you see it, you'll shit bricks. (I mean the girl in the corner, Rei Meerkat).

Shouta in a Harvey Birdman costume running the furry panel.

Spice and Wolf. These two pics are going to be horrible due to bad light and cellphone camera. But this is a prime example of excellent cosplay. Whoever says that fat people cannot cosplay is WRONG, it just depends on how well you cosplay. And the lady playing Horo was just adorable. They got the cosplay right, including such minute details like contacts, wigs, fangs, tail, and even a basket full of apples (Horo is addicted to apples). I applaud both of them for an awesome job.

The violinist who did the duel down in the food court, later on in the con.
Al and Edward from FMA. Love the eyes.
Hamburgular down in the food court.
$55 a night? That cheap? (somebody sleeping on an artist table. Would have taken her up on her offer...)
Cool armor. Not sure what it's from.
The armor guy again, and Clare from Claymore.
Ballerina from Princess Tutu.
Some Bleach characters. I don't know enough Bleach to know these people's names!
Charizard. There's a girl in that costume.
Cloud Strife from the FF7 spinoffs.
A group of Inu Yasha cosplayers for a photoshoot in the mall's atrium.
Darcia, the antagonist from Wolf's Rain. One of the better costumes there (he also hosted the Costume Contest).
Two characters from the Dot/hack anime/game series.
It's the double rainbow guy! Double rainbow! Almost a triple rainbow!
One, two, three pics of one of the villian robots from Escaflowne.
TF2 Heavy.
I DRIVE AT 88 MPH!!! (just in case).
Jack Skelington from Nightmare before Christmas. (there was two of them, I think this one was the better one).
Commander Keen. If you do not know who this is, I will weep.
One, two pics of Kefka from FF5 and his stormtrooper mook.
Lulu from FFX
Morrigan from Darkstalkers.
Now look at me. Now look at your boyfriend's cosplay. Now look back at me. Your boyfriend's cosplay is not as good as mine, but it could be if he used Old Spice.
Main female characters of Rayearth.
Don't even know (I call him the Red Bull guy).
Rita Repulsa (it's time to conquer Earth!!!).
Somewhat blurred shot of Sesshomaru.
Cosplay Shogi one, two, three, four.

Some shots of the building and area:
The RenCen from outside the atrium along the riverwalk.
The atrium looking at Canada.
Da Bridge to Canada and the Detroit casino boat.
Da casino boat.
The crosswalk to the riverfront. The lights would flash when people crossed the street.
One of the hotel bathrooms which was pretty fancy looking for a bathroom.
Two shots of the building interior looking up into the hotel.
Rent-a-cop headquarters.

And that's all that she wrote.
