Another week begins

This week's blog topic is the Mr. Rochester trope in fiction, inspired by seeing the new Jane Eyre movie this weekend. Would love to hear your thoughts!

In other news, how awesome is The Amazing Race this cycle? I swear CBS must be hiring people to fake heart attacks and break planes, because there have been so many unexpected reversals of fortune and changes of position. My faves are the Cowboys and the Globetrotters. I just love their positivity and good natures. Least fave racer is Ron, who is just an idiot. I don't know how Christina doesn't kill him. It was so silly when he was calling Kent and Vyxsin phonies, etc. Earth to Ron: this is a RACE. There are times when you have to tell a few white lies to avoid giving others an advantage. Sheesh.

Very pleased about the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss in The Hunter Games. I don't agree with the "racefail" position some fans are taking. Katniss and Gale are described as having olive skin and dark features. Katniss' sister and mother are blonde and blue-eyed, and there was never an indication Katniss had a different father than Prim. In my opinion, Katniss and Gale were not biracial, but Caucasians with dark features like many Italians, Greeks, etc. Now, if they cast white people as Thresh and Rue, that will be a problem. But with dark hair, I think Jennifer will totally look the part (and even with blonde hair -- Katniss' hair really isn't important). And, most importantly, she's an Oscar-nominated actress who can do justice to the role.

And this isn't to say that there shouldn't be more non-white actors in lead roles in TV and movies -- there absolutely should! Diversity is a big problem in Hollywood. But in this case, I don't think it is a "racefail" situation.

Now they just need to cast Hunter Parrish as Peeta. :D

ETA: shipperx summed it up nicely: "While I wouldn't have any issue with Katniss and Gale being bi-racial or cast as bi-racial, I never saw anything in the description in the books that makes that a pre-requisite...Whereas I really would be bothered if Rue's and Thresh's racial heritage were erased. That was explicit in the books, and I think quite important in the portrayal of various districts."

This.
