Canadian teenaged angst

Degrassi S10 is awesome. Probably my fave season yet. With the move to MuchMusic, they've glammed the proceedings up a bit (without losing the earnestness) and most importantly, have hired good actors. Love the new kids (except skanky Bianca, whom I'm sure has some inner turmoil we'll learn about soon). Eli, the goth-ish (heavy on the "ish") kid is a snarky delight, and I predictably am a fan of transgendered Adam (formerly Grace). Drew was a jock douche at first, but when he dropped the bravado to make up with Allie, I warmed to him. And then we find out that he transferred to Degrassi for the express purpose of protecting his stepbrother Adam. Awwww. I loved the line about not letting anyone hurt his sister, followed by, "Sorry, you know what I mean." I think they're writing the trans storyline really well. Lots of confusion and messy feelings, even among the people who are supporting Adam.

A co-worker mentioned the other day that she loves Degrassi but wouldn't admit it to most people. I don't believe in guilty pleasure, and also, I don't feel the slightest bit guilty. I love that Degrassi has two LGBT storylines that are completely independent of each other. I love that two of the main characters are Muslim. I love that it has possibly the most diverse cast on TV. I love that it promotes choice, and along with adoption and child rearing, lets its characters have abortions (even if Nickelodeon won't air those episodes). I love it's all about acceptance, not just tolerance. Loving Degrassi is nothing to be ashamed of from where I'm sitting.
