Gale slipped out the back door of his house late one night. He had spent much of the day watching the Games with his family. But after awhile there was only so much he could take, only so long he could watch Katniss fight for her life. He needed to get out of the house, out of District 12, even if it was only for a few hours.
He walked silently down the street, using the dark shadows cast by the other houses in the Seam as cover. He made his way towards the fence that separated District 12 from the rest of the world and quickly snuck through. He'd done it so many times before, so many times with her, that he didn’t even have to think. Once he cleared the fence he made his way into the safety of the surrounding trees. When he was sure he was out of sight he started to run.
He didn’t know how long he had been running before he finally stopped. His sides ached and he gasped for breath. Then he did something he swore he would never do, not even when his own father died. He cried. Cried for the girl he loved, who was fighting for her life at that exact moment. Cried for the life they could have had if there was no such thing as the Hunger Games or the Capitol. He realized it was useless, but he didn’t know what else to do.
All he could do was cry for his friend, his Catnip, and hold on to the hope that she would return safely to him.
