love.

Valentine's Day in New York City is cute and cheerful.  Everywhere I walked this morning and afternoon, I saw men carrying around paper-wrapped bouquets of small, brightly-colored tulips.

A stranger in Amy's Bread sat down at a table next to mine and told me that my Bill Bryson (not the one of Satellite fame) book looked like a good one for Valentine's Day because there were some spots of red on its cover.  Then, she mentioned that Valentine's Day is her excuse to buy herself sweets (like the scone she was eating).  (Of special note: This is my second book-related random-stranger-initiated conversation in two weeks in this city!)

This morning, I walked down the stairs to the Carroll St. subway platform on the way to work and taped to the first column I passed was a yellow sheet torn from a notebook, scrawled with a Sharpie:

"Kathleen, I'm in love with you. I had to leave early.  -Joe"

I'm certain that this was Joe's first mention of the L-word.  Something about it was very special.  Also, i still love You've Got Mail.
