She can’t do this now, a small part of her thinks. She can’t break now. She can’t. There will be a time for this, later, one day, but not tonight. Please, please not tonight.

Heavy steps hurry between the trees, crunching leaves and pine needles, and suddenly strong hands are gripping her by the shoulders, pulling her up. Thorin draws her gently into an embrace, his palms pressing warmly against her back. “Come now,” he whispers into her ear, “hush. Hush now.”

Grace buries her face against his neck, as she had wanted to when he awoke on the Carrock, and feels his skin against her cheek, warm and pulsing with life. Her arms hang limply at her sides until she breathes him in, the scent of him so familiar now, whereupon her hands fly up and grab fistfuls of his clothes, clinging to him with all the strength of an eagle’s talons.

“Hush,” he tells her again, tightening his hold on her. “Hush.”
