*waves* I'm back! Working on catching up, have loads of scribbles to transcribe and half-formed ideas to develop, as well as hundreds of photos from galavanting across Europe. Meanwhile, I'm going to snack on (burnt) coconut macarrons, tea, and the Winchesters. Folks are away until next Sunday, so I've got plenty of space and time to do as I'd like and then some.
A long while back, I went overboard in response to sylvia_bond's Review of 6x02. Thought I'd better post it all here, too. (Especially considering I can't bloody well find the comments anymore. What happened, did the cookie monster eat them or what?)
I hope you don’t think me terribly nitpicky, but when you say, "a child who can randomly switch physical traits, gender, or even nationality", I don’t think "nationality" is the word you're looking for, (which has nothing to do with appearance and everything to do with a country’s legalities), but rather (apparent-)ethnicity.
Dean has always been of the belief that if its a monster, you kill it, no questions asked. -> As Kimblery says, he's changed. The earliest solid evidence of this that I can remember is in Blood Lust when talking about letting the vampire Lenore and her troop go. Plus there's the more current evidence of him at least putting up with Ruby for the most part, teaming up with Crowley, etc. (although him going against Sam, who is very much in the "don’t kill the monster unless you have to" camp in Metamorphosis is an interesting contrast).
The Blood Lust dialogue showing this change of heart has stuck with me ever since:
Dean: What if we killed things that didn’t deserve killing? You know? I mean, the way Dad raised us...
[...]
Sam: You didn't kill Lenore.
Dean: No, but every instinct told me to. I was gonna kill her. I was gonna kill 'em all.
Sam: Yeah, Dean, but you didn't. And that’s what matters.
Dean Winchester: Yeah.
(That whole talk just stuck with me.)
He thinks he can condition the killer out of the Baby -> I understood the plan as completely the opposite: that they would use the hell out of the shapeshifter and its abilities and be all for it being a killer, as long as they had hold of the leash and it killed who they wanted and impersonated who they needed. Think was an awesome and versatile *tool* a shapeshifter could be!
Show has told us and Dean and Sam that ShapeShifters are evil. -> I'm not too sure about this. They might've gotten evil because of what they could do and what they could get away with (I'm reminded of HGWell's The Invisible Man, who did not end up nice at all). Then there's what the shifter in Skin said, "You know, everybody needs a little human touch now and then. It’s so hard to be different". This suggests that had Granpa Winchester been honest in his desire to raise the baby well, as a human, that he might have had a chance.
What this whole situation does is pose the questions whether monsters (some of them, at least) are made rather than born. The age-old nature-vs-nurture question, or our show's favorite edition of that, the destiny-vs-free-will one. Consider Metamorphosis where Sam says "Well, maybe he won't [turn]. Maybe he can fight it off." and Dean counters with "And maybe he can't, that's all I'm saying." There's this wonderful quote from Robert Stallman's The Orphan (1980) about the question of why monsters are evil which I think you might find interesting and relevant.
In all, I'm really liking the fact that the episodes are making us see the monsters in a different light, often stressing the family aspect. And I do not trust Sam entirely either. I spent the whole of 6x01 thinking he might've been Lucifer (because like salt or holy water or silver is an adequate test for that, right?).
