whoa... I'm just now realising how much of an influence Steve Reich's music must have had on the post-rock musical genre (Tortoise, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Mogwai, Yume Bitsu)... not to mention stuff from the 60s/70s like The Velvet Underground or Can or maybe even The Residents... I remember my dad used to play this CD of Reich's "The Four Corners" sometimes when I was like 5 or 6, it was really cool... this was when I was very much into classical music so even though Steve Reich's stuff was a bit newer he was still a "composer" so it was cool to like his work. And then I was around 10 I guess and my mom got a CD by the Kronos Quartet that I really loved (they're like this string quartet that plays more avant-garde music) and there was a movement from a Steve Reich piece on it that I liked so next time I was in New Haven with my dad we went to Cutler's Records, and I wanted to hear the whole piece ("Different Trains", it was called) but they didn't have the CD there so I had my dad order it from them and I got it in the mail and it was really really excellent. Anyhoo... I'm just sorta rediscovering this guy after getting his newer CD "Bang on a Can" and taking a listen today. Good stuff. A whole lot better than Philip Glass's dreadfully dreary droning stuff (both Steve Reich and Philip Glass were members of the 50s/60s music movement called "minimalism"... along with Terry Riley and LaMonte Young, the latter of whom I believe taught music to John Cale of the VUs... trust me about this stuff, I did a thesis on it)
HAVE A RICE DAY!!!
