MDF day three felt the aches and pains for sure and this being packed with awesome bands -STARTING at 1 PM,
made it hard to find time to take breaks. But you soldier on for the metal, fueled by beer, fest food
and the occasional vodka lemonade...
Stage A
►Entrails -awesome HM-2 Swedish death metal guitar tone, good performance.
►God Macabre -early Swedish death metal band that didn't have the classic sound or top tier material.
►Tankard -I drank beer the entire set. Energetic with a good sense of humor and one of the larger pits at MDF.
Second time they've played in the states. Would love to see a German metal package tour with them U.D.O. and Doro.
►Sarke -yawn; time for a hotel break.
►Dark Angel -the guitars sounded thin but Mr.Hoglan's drums held a clear place in the mix and that's the draw for me with this band.
I did set list research prior to ensure I didn't miss my favorite tunes and left after eight songs in order to catch the
last half of Hooded Menace's set. I'd recommend a club show with a 1.5 hour set but in this setting,
not worth repeating unless they've crafted new material.
Stage B
►Goat Torment -wake up and smell black metal; good way to start the day.
►Diocletian -awesome war metal that I wanted more of and later got it.
►Machetazo -horror-death-grind MDF favorites and mine too. Lively pit.
►Nocturnus AD -I expected the performance to be subpar and wasn't disappointed.
Though the band seemed capable, they needed a few more months of rehearsal and shows to be professional.
The Chapel of Ghouls cover lit up the crowd but the band screwed up halfway through and restarted it. Rock & Roll!
►Sacrifice -really good performance that showed the band has chops and prepared adequately.
Jed from SYL joined them on the last song and standing behind me cheering him on was Gene Hoglan
-he's continued to maintain his weight and doesn't use a cane anymore.
►Unleashed -seasoned festival pro's delivered a solid death metal set
Ram's Head Live
►War Master -skipped due to schedule conflict
►Bolzer -skipped due to schedule conflict
►Hooded Menace -caught last three songs, solid death-doom as always
►Schirenc plays Pungent Stench -tight band but didn't “wow” me
►Asphyx -more death-doom by one of the genre's best singers in a perfect setting.
I've said it before -MDF should have a Van Drunen fronted band every year. Luckily, he's got three to choose from.
No one would mind him fronting a cover band of select DM pros performing the entire Consuming Impulse LP either.
