Author’s Note: Here is my second TW story, and the first nondrabble.  So, I hope you like it; please let me know what you think of it.  This is actually the first of a 2 parter; the second should be up tomorrow, hopefully.

“Please Ianto; there must be something you want for your birthday.”  Jack was begging; it was 11 pm on August 18th, and in one hour it would be Ianto’s birthday; he still didn’t have anything for him, and he was desperate for ideas.

“I told you Jack, there isn’t anything I need.”

Jack smiled. “Yan, birthdays aren’t about getting things you need; it’s about getting things you want, things you’d never buy for yourself because it just isn’t sensible.”

Ianto sighed.  He could tell that Jack wasn’t going to let this go.  “Let me think about it, okay.  I’m bloody knackered and I just want to sleep.  I’ll try and give you something in the morning, yeah?”

“But tomorrow’s your birthday Ianto; how will I have time to go out and get anything?”

“I won’t be hurt if it’s a little late; it’s my fault that I couldn’t tell you anything earlier; besides, what are you going to be able to get for me at this hour anyway?”

Jack knew that was true.  He leaned in and kissed Ianto before settling back into the bed.  “Fine, but I’m holding you to it.  Tomorrow morning, I want you to give me some idea of what you want.  And nothing sensible Ianto; I want you to come up with something that you’ve always wanted, something random, and maybe even a bit selfish.  Because you deserve to be spoiled Ianto and you never let me.”

Settling in, Jack fell asleep rather quickly, while Ianto lay awake, wondering what he could want from Jack, what he could want and could ask for, without risking ruining everything.

(The next morning)

Ianto woke to the smell of food coming in from the kitchen.  Putting on a robe, he made his way out, only a little surprised to see Jack putting some eggs on a plate next to some toast.  A glass of juice was already on the table, and Ianto could smell that the coffee was brewing.  Jack turned and saw that Ianto was awake and greeted him with a smile.

“Happy birthday Ianto!  Sit down; I made you a birthday breakfast.  Let me just grab the coffee.”

Giving Ianto the plate as he sat, Jack moved over and poured them both mugs of coffee, then joined his lover at the table.  Ianto had already started eating, having experienced Jack’s breakfast a time or two before; while they weren’t anything spectacular, Ianto always appreciated someone getting food for him, instead of the other way around.

“So, Ianto, time’s up; what do you want for your birthday?”  Jack was practically bouncing in his chair, and Ianto couldn’t help but be reminded of a child…or a puppy.

“Well I…”

“Wait!  I forgot…hold that thought!”  Jack jumped up from the table, and ran into the other room.  Ianto heard some rustling, then a click.  It was silent for a moment then he could smell something burning.  Jack walked in a moment later, a small cake in his hands.  On top, were five candles, burning brightly.

Setting it in front of Ianto, Jack smiled and said softly.  “Make a wish.”

Closing his eyes, Ianto forced himself to hold back tears and made a wish.  Opening his eyes again, Ianto looked at Jack for just a moment, then leaned down and blew out the candles.

When he trusted himself to speak without sounding tearful, Ianto smiled at Jack mischievously.  “Five candles, Jack?  You do know that I’m 25 today, right?”

Jack smiled.  “Well, the bakery only had one box of candles, and if I had gone all over the city looking for them, you probably would have caught on.  So, I figured one candle for every five years.  Besides, the cake was rather small, and I thought it would look better with only a few candles.”

Ianto couldn’t fault Jack’s logic on either counts; he would have caught on if Jack had spent hours one day out and refusing to say where he had gone.  And, the cake would probably have looked a bit overwhelmed, had it been covered in 25 candles.

As Ianto turned back to his breakfast, still touched by the cake, Jack asked again, “Okay, now, what is it you want for your birthday, Yan?”

Ianto smiled, and knew in an instant what it was he truly wanted for his birthday.  It fit Jack’s specifications of being random, a bit selfish, and was something he would never give himself.  “When I blew out the candles, Jack, I made a wish.  And for my birthday, I want you to make that wish come true.”
