The elven lady crouched at the water's edge, her legs spread so that the river washed the blood away. Another year without a child inside her, another potential life wasted. She would have wept if there was anyone about who could understand.
Moonlight lent a luminescence to her already pale skin, gifting her an ethereal quality. Starlight softened the poisonously bright green of her eyes, and sunk into her brown hair. She seemed spectral in the nighttime, only the red blood at all real. The twilight maiden had yet to fully relinquish her nature, had yet to become the night mother.
Maliar reached between her legs, dyeing her fingers with blood. She raised them up to the moon and painted over her perception of it. This was lifeblood on her fingers, lifeblood that she cast away to the waters. The rituals she could perform, the havoc she could wreak with such power at her disposal... It did not bear thinking upon.
She had power beyond the ability of most to gain. She had achieved true immortality, binding her soul to her body in ways unbreakable by anyone without either her skill or her power.
And yet...
Those who could not die could not live. Those who could not live could not change. Those who could not change could not grow.
An eternity of stagnation lay before her, for she knew not how to undo what she had done.
