His Freedom is My Freedom

My son has finally reached that age where he'll really just play on his own for a while. It's fantastic. The other day I was able to say, "Please go play while I make dinner," and he did! For like 30 minutes he played on his own, too. I only had to go look in on him when things got too quiet. Quiet is always bad. Normally he gets quiet when he finds something new. Something he shouldn't be playing with. I don't think it's as sinister (yet) as purposely trying to be quiet, he just gets overwhelmed by curiosity and stops being noisy. Still, it's really great that his freedom to play by himself is my freedom to do dishes or get dinner ready.

I have to say that I'm really proud of our dog too. She's really good with him. He's at that age now where he's kind of a little menace to her. He tries to do the things we do with her. Namely, he tries to pick her up, which mostly just results in him squeezing her. He also does the typically toddler stuff of pulling her ears and tail. All of which she might growl at, but mostly she just puts up with it. If she really wants to get away, she starts to lick him. She'll just keep licking till he falls over, at which point she might get revenge by licking him till he's breathless from giggling, or she might just bolt out the back door. Still, I'm super happy with the dog's behavior around him.

We went and saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World last night. I highly recommend this film. It was everything I wanted it to be. It's very funny, the action is great, and the presentation of the film is quite original. Seriously, see it. Even if you too are tired of Micheal Cera only playing one damn character all the time. It's really worth it.
