So I was justing thinking the other day when things were getting real shitty and I came up with some thoughts. I haven't posted in a while so I figured I'd share them with you all.

So when times get real shitty and nobody loves you (not even your brother Billo), many of us turn to [insert any religious figure here]. So times are tough and ( Read more... )

Freedom, Beauty, Truth, and Love. We are the children of the revolution. The last two sentences reminded me of that.

I completely understand what you've written above. I've thought about it too. I believe that people turn to religion for just those things. But I also think they use it because they're afraid of what they don't know. Fear. They fear what may happen to them next. They're afraid there is nothing after death. They're afraid of what may happen if they don't stay faithful to everything they've grown up with. Religion instills fear into those that believe. Believers must follow religion almost blindly to secure safety in life and whatever comes after life. Fear is used in not only religion but government. It scares followers, believers and citizens to keep following and believing. Are you afraid?

The thing I liked about the last sentence was the faith part. Becuz thats all you have when it comes to things you cant see. But I think its odd when people say believers follow religion blindly.. I can only speak for myself, but you gotta follow whats in your heart and if you can feel ghosts around you, then youll believe in ghosts. if you feel some all knowing and all loving creator, then youll believe in a creator. We all feel different ways. But religion does not instill fear in people who really believe cuz that would be the opposite of what Allison just said about religion being a comfort. Im not afraid. Im comforted becuz who doesnt feel good when they feel loved?! Not becuz ive been told Jesus loves me or I hope he does, but becuz I Feel it. Allison, you got it right when we shud all respect each other regardless of what we follow or dont follow. sometimes, i feel like people who dont believe act like im an idiot becuz i do.

During the medieval ages the fear instilled through religion was used as a tool to keep servants in line, however, like the post above me says, it's more of a comfort than a fear nowadays. Both are very similar in that they result in the same thing but the difference is their main focus. For people to turn to religion for comfort from their problems doesn't necessarily solve anything like you mentioned, however, even if they don't receive any direct divine help they can gain a sense of confidence and comfort which may give them the emotional support needed to help themselves. If people lose hope that they can ever be forgiven or go to a better place when they die it puts them in a despairing state of mind where they never seek to better themselves because there's no point ( ... )

It's unfortunate how human instituted religion gets in the way of who God really is. You are completely right in saying that people use religion for comfort, one of my friends grew up in a very conservative church and she told me, "it's easy to follow rules of what you should and shouldn't do." This is what people are using religion for - do these things and you'll be a good person and you'll go to heaven. Unfortunately for these people, this is not what the Bible says. The Bible tells us that "to all who believed in him, to all who called on his name, he gave the right to become children of God." (John 1:12) While God promises to watch over us and protect us, this is not the point of salvation. It's unfortunate that you're completely right that people have used Jesus to create a religion for comfort on this earth. We shouldn't be living for the earthly life, but for the eternal life ( ... )
